Herbs that Boost Your Metabolism

There are many ways to increase your metabolism. For most people it starts with the right diet and exercise.

An efficient metabolism also requires the smooth running of many complex body processes that rely on sufficient antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C and the B vitamins, and sometimes supplements are required to correct any deficiencies.

There are also a variety of herbs and spices that can boost your metabolism. Here are eight of them:

Tumeric or Curcumin

That spice that's in almost every curry -- that's turmeric. It has been reported to increase metabolism by increasing bile production within the body, as well as lowering blood sugar levels. Be careful with curry, though. Curries are full of creams and fats that do anything but increase your metabolism. Further Turmeric (or Curcumin) benefits are that it can help detoxify your blood and support a healthy inflammation response. Turmeric or Curcumin should be taken with peperine or black pepper to help with bioavailability.

Cayenne Pepper or Capsicum

Cayenne pepper helps support body fat by increasing oxygen consumption. Cayenne pepper may also support blood pressure, blood circulation, and digestion. Capsicum is a natural stimulant without the threatening side effects (palpitations, hyper-activity or rise in blood pressure) like most other stimulating agents. Cayenne's primary chemical ingredients include capsaicin, capsanthin, beta carotene, flavonoids, and vitamin C. Cayenne Pepper is a very high source of Vitamins A and C, has the complete B complexes, and is very rich in organic calcium and potassium.

Cinnamon

It is known as an "insulin mimicker" meaning it minimizes the amount of insulin your body produces after a meal by transporting sugar molecules into cells within the body. Cinnamon also may slow down the emptying of the stomach after a large meal, leaving you to fill fuller and less likely to snack. Now, cinnamon rolls don't count. Cinnamon is also an ingredient in our new product, Sweet FX.

Kelp

Kelp is a natural thyroid stimulant, which may support metabolism. Kelp, as well as other seaweeds, raise metabolism in two ways: they affect the thyroid gland and they increase basal metabolic rate (the speed at which your body burns calories while at rest). Iodine, an important component of kelp, has a direct effect on basal metabolic rate.

Kelp is believed to stimulate a thyroid hormone which is responsible for boosting metabolism. By returning the iodine levels to normal, it can help alleviate low-grade hypothyroidism. Kelp contains large amounts of potassium, and naturally varying amounts of trace minerals, which may be useful in maintaining proper glandular function and metabolism. Some medications for high blood pressure can increase potassium levels in the blood. Taking Kelp along with some medications for high blood pressure might cause too much potassium in the blood.

Ginger

Studies by ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) show Ginger supported the digestion process by absorbing the necessary nutrients into the system and regulated the metabolism cycle. The gingerol is the majorly active component in ginger. Such active components in ginger activate the muscular activity in the digestive track and stimulate the chemical reactions in the digestive system. Ginger is an important ingredient used in the traditional Ayurvedic medicines to support the metabolism and digestive system. Researchers have found that ginger may help settle the stomach during times of occasional nausea, motion sickness and morning sickness.

Yerba Mate

A stimulant similar to caffeine, this herb can also increase blood pressure. Yerba Mate is also is a good source of antioxidants. It also contains many nutrients like potassium, chromium, iron, niacin and magnesium. Yerba Mate suppresses your appetite and increases energy levels, therefore stimulating the ability to burn unwanted calories faster.

Yerba Mate contains a content named mateine, which increase metabolism and energy. It also help you to get rid of allergy symptoms, act as a gentle diuretic and colon cleanse, nutritionally speed up the healing process and decrease stress. Yerba mate can be used in as a tea drink. It is also found in a supplement pill or energy drink. Those who are on blood pressure medication or are sensitive to stimulants should avoid Yerba Mate.

Green Tea

Green tea is a thermogenic agent, which means, that you may burn more calories. Green Tea is also a stimulant which contains powerful antioxidant, as well as, caffeine. The antioxidants found in green tea also aids in energy production. It can also be found in capsules for those who do not wish to make tea. The chemical in green tea, or Green Tea extract, known as EGCG (or epigallocatechin gallate) is known to speed up your metabolism, among many other benefits.

Bitter Orange

Bitter Orange which is an extract of Seville oranges is a stimulant and works on receptors in fat tissues.

How The Nervous System Works and Affects Everything in The Body

The human nervous system is an amazing network of organs, nerve cells (neurons) and and neurotransmitters, connecting the brain and spinal cord to the entire body.  It runs on electricity, sending and receiving signals at lightning speed to keep every part of the body functioning effectively.  The nervous truly helps regulate everything happening in your body, whether it’s occurring consciously or unconsciously.

It is divided into two branches:

• Conscious/voluntary — controls perception, analysis, memory, movement

• Unconscious/involuntary (also called Autonomic) — takes care of all of the things you don’t think about, such as your heartbeat, digestion, regulating body temperature, breathing, etc.

Your Autonomic branch is further divided into two smaller branches:

• Sympathetic
• Parasympathetic

The Sympathetic nervous system gets you prepared for activity. It increases mental activity, heart rate and blood pressure, dilates the bronchials, slows or halts digestion, stimulates the release of stress hormones, makes goose bumps on the skin and more. When we’re excited, stressed or scared, the sympathetic nervous system gears us up for action (fight or flight) but shuts down digestion and elimination.

The Parasympathetic nervous system helps you wind down, relax and digest your food. It relaxes mental activity, lowers heart rate and blood pressure, increases the flow of blood to the extremities, constricts bronchials and stimulates digestion. As we relax and unwind, the parasympathetic nervous system moves blood to the digestive organs, relaxes muscles and allows elimination.

A stimulated nerve cell fires an electrical impulse that moves across the cell. At the end of the cell, this electricity triggers the nerve to squirt neurotransmitters (specialized chemicals) into the gap between this cell and the next one. These chemicals fill the space and either stimulate the next cell or prevent it from firing another electrical impulse, depending on what is needed.

Neurotransmitters control or regulate all kinds of things, including depression, addictions, mood, appetite, sleep, certain diseases of the brain and nervous system, and ADHD.

Key neurotransmitters include:

• Serotonin helps control mood, hunger, sleep, pain response and more.
• Acetylcholine aids in memory and muscle movement. When the brain is short on acetylcholine, memory suffers.
• Dopamine is responsible for sexual arousal and muscle coordination. Parkinson’s disease sufferers lack this neurotransmitter.
• GABA helps prevent anxiety and increases mental clarity.
• Epinephrine is released during times of stress. It can raise blood pressure and heart rate. It also opens the bronchioles to help restore normal breathing.
• Norepinephrine helps maintain constant blood pressure when levels get too low.

As you can see, the vast network of the human nervous system affects or controls EVERYTHING in the body. It pays to take great care of your nervous system with a healthful diet, the right supplements and plenty of rest.

Another Canadian City Bans Fluoride From Water Supply

A growing number of people on the planet are beginning to wake up to the truth about fluoride and how harmful it really is.

Windsor, Ontario, Canada has joined a number of other Canadian municipalities that have voted to put a stop to the practice of putting fluoride into the water supply. The vote was passed earlier this week after a five hour debate between medical experts and the city council.

It seems the general public does not know a lot about fluoride, although many are starting to question its use and overall safety considering its presence in both our toothpaste and water supply. Sodium fluoride, sodium silicofluoride and hydrofluorosilicic acid are all used in dental offices, toothpaste and water fluoridation practices. They are toxic waste substances created from the creation processes in the fertilizer, steel, nuclear and aluminum industries.

Why do we continue to debate on a substance going into our bodies when it is illegal to dump the hazardous fluoride waste products into water streams or rivers? Read the entire article.

Loneliness Taxes the Immune System

The truth ... is that science is catching up with the Word of God. The scriptures are very clear that we are not meant to be alone, that we were created for relationship, first and foremost with God and then with each other: Genesis 2:18 “It is not good that man should be alone,” and 1 Corinthians 12 -20.

Poor quality relationships, which make you feel lonely, are definitively linked to a number of health problems. More specifically, research links loneliness to a number of dysfunctional immune responses and increased blood pressure.

Researchers saw that people who were lonelier produced more inflammation-related proteins in response to stress than did people that were more socially connected. This means they reacted more strongly to stressful situations than those people that did not consider themselves to be lonely.

Chronic inflammation is linked to numerous conditions including coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease as well as the frailty and decline that can come with aging.  Read the entire article.

Aspartame Hidden In Milk & Diary Products

“The integrity of our food supply is poised for another blow. By asking the FDA to alter the definition of “milk” to include chemical sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose without full disclosure will only lead to further distrust among consumers.

This is a bad idea for consumers and not a smart idea for the industry either,” explains Sally Fallon Morell, president and founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation. While aimed principally at replacing sugar in flavored milks served to school children, the petition also asks for the right to put hidden artificial sweeteners in a host of dairy products including nonfat dried milk (always added to reduced-fat milks), yogurt, cream, half-and-half, sour cream, eggnog and whipping cream.  Read the entire article.

Obesity and Inflammation … Doorways to Disease

by Darlyn Britt

The Centers for Disease Control defines obesity as having a Body Mass Index of 30 or higher. (BMI is a ratio of your weight to your height. For most people, this number correlates to their amount of body fat.) Obesity is associated with a litany of health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, stroke, metabolic syndrome, type II diabetes and depression.

Consider these facts:
• More than one-third of U.S. adults (over 72 million people) and 17% of U.S. children are obese.

• During 1980–2008, obesity rates doubled for adults and tripled for children. This affects all population groups—regardless of age, sex, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, education level or geographic region.

• About 80–90% of the people diagnosed with type II diabetes are also clinically obese. Being overweight makes it difficult for your body to maintain proper blood glucose levels, which can cause your body to become resistant to insulin. Diabetics need to take even more insulin to get sugar (energy) into their cells. And for obese people who don’t have diabetes, the prolonged effects of insulin resistance can eventually cause you to develop the disease.

• Obesity is associated with increased risks of various cancers: esophagus, breast (postmenopausal), endometrium, colon and rectum, kidney, pancreas, thyroid and gallbladder.

Inflammation is the body’s normal response to a stimulus. For example, when you smash your finger in a closing door, it swells and becomes inflamed. Swelling is the body’s mechanism for healing a wound or fighting infection. Temporary inflammation is natural and normal.

But when a stimulus is repeated over and over, such as damage to a joint, inflammation often leads to chronic pain and possible infection. Over time, the inflammation cycle breaks down organ function, tends to weaken the heart and can trigger deadly diseases, including type II diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, heart disease, stroke, lupus and congestive heart failure. It can also usher in other unwanted conditions like arthritis, fibrosis, anemia, asthma and fibromyalgia.

Inflammation is a key to the aging process, and like a key, it can “unlock” or turn on disease genes we may carry. So if you have a family history of heart disease, and you experience chronic inflammation, your heart disease switch may get turned on.

Inflammation is compounded by diet. Unfortunately, the average American diet does not help at all.
• High blood sugar, brought on by repeated blood sugar spikes from a high-sugar or high-carb diet, leads to inflammation.

• Acidity also incites inflammation. Acidity occurs when pH is too low. Eating lots of meat, sugar, simple carbs and most junk food makes your body more acidic. Consequently raw foods like colorful vegetables, fresh fruits and some nuts help to neutralize acidity.

• Oxidation is a condition where pollution, radiation, environmental chemicals and other stressors attack cells and can damage tissues. The body tries to combat this with inflammation.

Controlling chronic inflammation can help reduce the risk of disease and perhaps help slow the aging process.

Brain Preservation

By Dr. William J. Keller

Protecting brain health is imperative for meaningful and healthy aging.  Scientific and medical wisdom suggest that some degree of cognitive decline is part of the aging process. The possibility of living longer and healthier lives is within reach, but brain health must be preserved while achieving this goal.  For this reason, it’s quite encouraging to learn that scientists have discovered that neurological structure and function can be preserved and even restored. We can now offer scientifically substantiated approaches to enhancing our cognitive health.

Factors That Lead to Mental Decline

Various factors contribute to the gradual decline of mental acuity as we age. Recent studies suggest that inflammation, high blood pressure, elevated insulin levels, obesity, arterial inelasticity and a condition known as metabolic syndrome are all risk factors and can lead to a decline in brain health.

Anxiety and depression can also predispose an individual to a deterioration of brain health. A good strategy for preserving brain function starts with preventing illnesses that are known to contribute to cognitive decline.

The old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” definitely applies here. Good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle are obviously beneficial to brain health and a great place to start. A healthy neurological system is also dependent on keeping blood pressure and body weight in check, avoiding diabetes and its precursor metabolic syndrome, as well as treating depression and anxiety disorders.

Supplements that Support Brain Health

A number of well-known dietary supplement ingredients support brain health. Nerve cells (neurons) have a high-energy demand, and hence free radicals are abundant due to a high level of oxidative metabolism within neurons. Antioxidants scavenge these free radicals and thus minimize neuronal damage. Alpha-lipoic acid is quite valuable for neuronal protection because of solubility characteristics that allow considerable free radical-neutralizing activity within nerve cell mitochondria.

Inflammation is implicated in a wide variety of neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease. Ginkgo biloba leaf extract (GBE) is well known for its neuroprotective effects mediated through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action. GBE has been used extensively for memory enhancement as well as in a wide variety of dementias. Omega-3 fatty acids, in particular docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been used quite frequently to combat neurological damage and inflammation.

Phosphatidylserine (PS) and related phospholipids are integral components of every cell membrane and are particularly abundant in brain neuronal membranes. In Europe and Japan, PS is sold as a prescription drug to remedy memory loss and learning deficits. We have known for years that declining levels of the essential neurotransmitter acetylcholine is responsible for a wide range of cognitive deficits(1).

By boosting acetylcholine levels in the brain, cognitive deficits are reversed. One approach to increasing brain acetylcholine levels involves inhibiting acetylcholine esterase, the enzyme responsible for acetylcholine metabolism or breakdown.

Many of the prescription drugs used to treat Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias act as cholinesterase inhibitors. Huperzine A is a naturally occurring cholinesterase inhibitor sold as a nutritional supplement. This alkaloid is isolated and purified from extracts of the Chinese club moss, Huperzia serrata. Huperzine A has been found to be both potent and effective in elevating brain levels of acetylcholin(2).

I have always thought of progesterone as having an important role in female health. It has been known for quite some time that progesterone is also produced by males but at much lower levels. Recently, it was discovered that progesterone is synthesized in the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves from the precursor molecule pregnenolone (3).

I was surprised to learn that within the brain and the nervous system in general, progesterone offers neuroprotection and is intimately involved with the formation of myelin sheaths. These findings suggest that progesterone, now referred to as a neurosteroid, has the potential to preserve cognitive functions because of these neuroprotective and promyelinating effects. Very recently, animal studies revealed that progesterone inhibited the inflammatory response and enhanced the recovery from traumatic brain injury and stroke (4).

Conclusion

At this point, the conclusion is that progesterone supports brain health and combats neurodegeneration that may occur during the aging process. The brain, like any other organ or system in the body, is subject to the aging process. During this process, physical and biochemical changes in brain cells can lead to various degrees of cognitive impairment. This loss of brain function as we age is not inevitable.

Scientific research has demonstrated mechanisms that explain cognitive decline as well as nutrients/supplement ingredients that can slow and even reverse the progression of age-related brain degeneration. Natural supplements provide a smart option for maintaining optimal brain health throughout life.

The Positive Impact of Religion on Health

Some people need more than the Word of God to believe things written in it. For those who validate a lot of scientific evidence, you will enjoy seeing how science if catching up with what The Word has said for ages.

The Biology of Belief
By Jeffrey Kluger

We travel to Lourdes in search of a miracle; we go to Mecca to show our devotion; we eat hallucinogenic mushrooms to attain transcendent vision and gather in church basements to achieve its sober opposite. But there is nothing we pray — or chant or meditate — for more than health.

People who believe in a loving God fare better after a diagnosis of illness than people who believe in a punitive God. No less a killer than AIDS will back off at least a bit when it's hit with a double-barreled blast of belief.

"Even accounting for medications," says Dr. Gail Ironson, a professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Miami who studies HIV and religious belief, "spirituality predicts for better disease control."

The author of four books, including the soon-to-be-released How God Changes Your Brain he has looked more closely than most at how our spiritual data-processing center works, conducting various types of brain scans on more than 100 people, all of them in different kinds of worshipful or contemplative states. Over time, Newberg and his team have come to recognize just which parts of the brain light up during just which experiences.

When people engage in prayer, it's the frontal lobes that take the lead, since they govern focus and concentration. During very deep prayer, the parietal lobe powers down, which is what allows us to experience that sense of having loosed our earthly moorings.

The frontal lobes go quieter when worshippers are involved in the singular activity of speaking in tongues — which jibes nicely with the speakers' subjective experience that they are not in control of what they're saying.  Read the entire article.

Long-Term Sad Effects of a Happy Meal

From Kimberly Snyder's Blog

What I propose to do here is to start you thinking, really thinking, about the implications of every fast food meal. Some will say “Everything in moderation,” but I say not so with fast food. Each fast food meal digests to leave hormones, steroids, next-to-impossible to digest oils, cheap refined sugars and so many other horrible substances in your body that we made a whole infographic (below) on the subject.

Please share this with friends and family members that eat fast food. Maybe next time old Micky D’s calls out to them they turn their back and go somewhere healthier to eat or just eat a simple, but infinitely healthier meal at home.

New Product: Liquid Chlorophyll Extra Strength

Protect and Strengthen Healthy Cells

Go extra green. This extra-strength, paraben-free formula features a more potent level of chlorophyll—the green pigment in plants responsible for harnessing the sun’s energy in photosynthesis.

Known to support your body on both a molecular and cellular level, chlorophyll promotes circulatory, intestinal, digestive and immune health. Featuring a proprietary chlorophyll complex, this minty fresh formula also helps neutralize body odors and acts as a natural, “internal” deodorant.

Boost your energy and overall well-being today with Liquid Chlorophyll ES.*

Ingredients:
Proprietary chlorophyll complex—the most critical molecule in the plant world, chlorophyll is found in all green plants and vegetables. It’s particularly concentrated in spinach and wheatgrass.

The sodium copper chlorophyll form contained in Nature’s Sunshine Liquid Chlorophyll ES is soluble in water.

With the exception of a magnesium atom, chlorophyll’s structure is identical to hemoglobin, the molecule that carries oxygen in the blood, so it is thought to assist with natural blood-cleansing and to support healthy circulation. It also may support digestive health, toxin elimination and regularity.

Like curcumin, chlorophyll acts as a particularly potent natural antioxidant that may help keep cells healthy by protecting them from oxidative damage.

Our proprietary complex also includes refreshing spearmint oil, a natural odor fighter. *

Benefits:
• Helps promote the natural blood-cleansing functions of the body*
• Promotes circulatory, intestinal, digestive and immune health*
• Protects and strengthens healthy cells*
• Encourages balanced pH levels in the body*
• Deodorizes the body, including the bowel*
• Paraben free

Recommended Use:
Mix 1 teaspoon (5 ml) in an 8 ounce glass of nature’s Spring water twice daily. Refrigerate after opening.
