Adults Need Play Time

Our society tends to dismiss play for adults. Play is perceived as unproductive, petty or even a guilty pleasure.

The notion is that once we reach adulthood, it’s time to get serious. And between personal and professional responsibilities, there’s no time to play. But play is just as pivotal for adults as it is for kids.

“We don’t lose the need for novelty and pleasure as we grow up,” according to Scott G. Eberle, Ph.D, vice president for play studies at The Strong and editor of the American Journal of Play.

Play brings joy. And it’s vital for problem solving, creativity and relationships.  Read the entire article.

Most Store Honey Isn't Honey

From Food Safety News

More than three-fourths of the honey sold in U.S. grocery stores isn’t exactly what the bees produce, according to testing done exclusively for Food Safety News.

The results show that the pollen frequently has been filtered out of products labeled “honey.” The removal of these microscopic particles from deep within a flower would make the nectar flunk the quality standards set by most of the world’s food safety agencies.

The food safety divisions of the World Health Organization, the European Commission and dozens of others also have ruled that without pollen there is no way to determine whether the honey came from legitimate and safe sources.

In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration says that any product that’s been ultra-filtered and no longer contains pollen isn’t honey. However, the FDA isn’t checking honey sold here to see if it contains pollen.  Read the entire article and view a list of brands that were tested.

Xylitol provides just 40 percent of the calories that sucrose does. It has a great dark chocolate taste with no artificial aftertaste. Xylitol is safe for diabetics, hypoglycemics, children and pregnant women.

The Nervous System Pack contains four different formulations designed to nourish nervous system health, including Stress-J (promotes relaxation and well-being), Adaptamax (helps the body adapt to stressful situations, fatigue and more), Nerve Eight (may help reduce cellular stress and promote sleep) and Nutri-Calm® (calms the nervous system and encourages restful sleep). Try it for 30 days, and feel the tranquility.

Stress Relief TCM combines 14 Chinese herbs and nutrients in a highly concentrated blend to promote nervous system function and support emotional balance.

The Chinese name for this formula means "to pacify the spirit." That sounds so nice. Key ingredients include oyster shell, haliotis shell and fushen. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, oyster shell is known for its ability to calm and to reduce anxiety. Haliotis has similar properties. Fushen is used by the Chinese for restlessness and to relieve anger. Certain nutrients in this formula also offer gastrointestinal support.

Getting More Energy

Energy Exploration
Created by Dr. William J. Keller

Many of us complain that our days are filled with excessive demands to work more, yet we don’t have enough energy to meet those demands. For this reason, many people are searching for natural “fuel” that will solve this energy crisis. We seek an energy-boosting product to give us mental alertness, the ability to stay awake and one that will help us acquire the physical and mental stamina to address and complete the job at hand.  Many consumers like Red Bull and related, highly caffeinated products, but a large contingent also feel that these caffeinated drinks are not healthful.

In reality, caffeine, a major ingredient in energy drinks, is not as bad as some make it out to be. Like any supplement ingredient, caffeine can cause negative, harmful effects in certain sensitive individuals and/or when excessive amounts are consumed. But in moderation, caffeine can improve physical performance and significantly enhance the mental performance parameters of concentration and memory. A large portion of our population desires greater energy, but caffeine can make certain individuals feel nauseated or jittery.

Another popular source of energy is green tea, which naturally contains caffeine and the amino acid theanine. Theanine induces mental and physical relaxation without drowsiness. With this combination of actives, green tea provides energetic well-being without the jitters.

Citrus aurantium (bitter orange) contains synephrine, an active that will induce weight loss through thermogenesis. However, bitter orange and synephrine are often found in energy-promoting formulations because of their stimulant activity.

Caffeine and synephrine definitely boost the feeling of energy because they both stimulate the central nervous system (CNS). Coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) provides energy at the cellular level due to its key role in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production within the mitochondria. You will sometimes see ATP referred to as the cellular energy currency. In other words, every human cell contains varying numbers of mitochondria, and these so-called cellular power plants require Co-Q10 for their energy-producing operation.

D-Ribose, a pentose sugar, is also critical to cellular energetics because of its incorporation into the ATP chemical structure. Ribose facilitates the formation of the high-energy ATP molecule. Myocardial cells appear to benefit the most from ribose supplementation because these heart muscle cells are generally regarded as having the largest number of mitochondria of any cell in the
body. Several studies have demonstrated the energy-yielding benefit of ribose supplementation in patients with congestive heart failure.1

Certain B vitamins and amino acids are important to cellular energetics. Vitamins B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid) and B7 (biotin) are known to be directly involved with cellular biochemical energy production and appear to influence mitochondrial function. L-Carnitine and several of its derivatives, such as acetylcarnitine, are naturally occurring organic acids known to facilitate the metabolism (oxidation) of fatty acids at the level of the mitochondria. Therefore, carnitine analogs will definitely boost cellular energy production and are commonly found in energy-yielding formulas.

Two general research areas that are of great interest to me involve biological and biochemical descriptions/theories of aging mechanisms as well as process concepts of efficient biological energy production. A landmark paper was published online in February 2011 by the prestigious journal Nature.2 This paper scientifically describes a link between the telomere shortening theory of aging and energy yielding mitochondrial function.

Bear with me as I present the following explanation because I believe that this complex research offers some insight as to why we age and why older individuals simply do not seem to produce the energy that is seen with younger individuals. When the cell’s mitochondria are operating efficiently, there is more than enough energy/power to operate the cell and, collectively, the organism (human). If, for some reason, there is mitochondrial dysfunction, power failure results.

As we age, the chromosomal cap, called a telomere, becomes shorter with each successive division of the cell. At some point in time, cells with short telomeres enter senescence (the state of being old), fail to replicate, and eventually die.

Long before cell death, the gradual shortening of the telomere in the aging cell affects mitochondrial function. It seems that this mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with DNA damage that results from excessive free radical production during the ATP-producing electron transport process.

Previous research has shown that this increased concentration of free radicals in the mitochondria not only causes mitochondrial DNA damage but also contributes to telomere shortening.3 The short telomere suppresses mitochondrial DNA repair and thus the dysfunctional mitochondria continue to produce more free radicals and less energy. It’s definitely a vicious cycle that offers some explanation as to why we age and why older people feel short- changed when physical energy is required.

An obvious intervention would be to reduce mitochondrial dysfunction by combating the free radical-induced damage of mitochondrial DNA. The well-known antioxidants do not appear to concentrate in the mitochondria and thus the traditionally recognized polyphenols may not be of too much value here.

Glutathione occurs naturally in the mitochondria and is quite effective in preventing mitochondrial oxidative stress. N-Acetyl-cysteine is often used to provide a precursor molecule during glutathione synthesis and may increase mitochondrial glutathione levels. Alpha-lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant and appears to have the solubility characteristics for fairly efficient delivery to the mitochondria. Co-Q10 readily penetrates the mitochondria not only to provide antioxidant protection but to function as part of the energy-producing electron transport chain.

Research continues in an effort to discover or to develop antioxidants that will accumulate in the mitochondria to provide some very important health benefits. We can now make the case for antioxidants improving energy production by preventing mitochondrial DNA damage as well as increasing longevity by diminishing the effects of excessive free radical production on telomere shortening.

Study Supports Eating Wheat, Despite Gluten-Free Trend

As more Americans shun wheat in favor of gluten-free diets, a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, January 2013, gives insight into why giving up grains may not be the answer to our growing health problems.

The research studied the effects of replacing standard whole grain products in subjects’ diets with ancient khorasan wheat, and found that doing so reduced their metabolic risk factors, raised their antioxidant capacities, and decreased inflammatory activity.

Khorasan wheat, known under the brand name of KAMUT, is a grain unlike most of today’s versions of wheat because it has not been genetically modified, hybridized or grown with chemicals or pesticides, so many people allergic to other brands of wheat can eat it without ill effects.

“This grain has not been altered by man since ancient times and therefore remains virtually the same as it was when first gathered from the wild when man first transitioned from a hunter/gatherer to a farmer,” said Bob Quinn, founder of KAMUT International.  Read the entire article.

Healing Properties of 13 Common Fruits

Fruit is not only enjoyable to eat -- as it should be, considering the very word fruit stems from the Latin word frui, meaning "to enjoy, use" -- but it also nourishes and protects the body with powerful, built-in medicinal activity. Fruits are by design a "perfect food," intended to entice animals to consume them in order to help disseminate their seeds, for instance.

This means that unlike grains, and other lectin- and anti-nutrient-rich organisms, e.g. wheat, tomato, beans, we humans have chosen to make into our food, fruits are less likely to come equipped with "invisible thorns," as they benefit as much in being eaten as we do in eating them.

Also, like our now hard-wired biological dependence on obtaining vitamin C from external sources ... Read the entire article.

75-98% of Mental & Physical Illness Comes From Thoughts

This doctor's website is awesome.  A Christian view of scientific discoveries.  It shows science is lining up with the Word of God.  Hallelujah!

She has a book out that is a great gift for Valentine's Day for husbands and wives.  It's called, "Who Switched Off Your Brain, Solving the Mystery of He Said/She Said."

By Dr. Caroline Leaf

This is a staggering and eye-opening statistic because it also means that only 2-25% of human mental and physical illnesses come from the environment and genes! Scientists are discovering the precise pathways by which changes in human consciousness (thinking) produce changes in our brain and bodies.

This consciousness activates our genes and changes our brain. Science even shows that thoughts, with their embedded feelings, turn sets of genes on and off in complex relationships. We take the facts, experiences and the events of our lives and assign meaning to them through thinking—we are reacting to the events and circumstances of life.

.... when we make a poor quality thinking decision—i.e. a toxic thought—such as unforgiveness, bitterness or irritation, we change the DNA and subsequent genetic expression affecting the shape of the wiring in our brain in a negative direction. This immediately puts the brain into protect mode and the brain translates these poor quality toxic thoughts as stress. This stress will then manifest itself in our bodies. Read the entire article.

Milk and Osteoporosis

The milk myth has spread around the world based on the flawed belief that this protein and calcium-rich drink is essential to support good overall health and bone health in particular at any age. It is easy to understand that the confusion about milk’s imaginary benefits stems from the fact that it contains calcium – around 300 mg per cup.

But many scientific studies have shown an assortment of detrimental health effects directly linked to milk consumption. And the most surprising link is that not only do we barely absorb the calcium in cow’s milk (especially if pasteurized), but to make matters worse, it actually increases calcium loss from the bones. What an irony this is! Here’s how it happens. .

Aspartame Linked to Leukemia & Lymphoma

The Most Comprehensive Study to Date on Aspartame

This study tracks over two million person-years giving it a huge pile of data to generate results from.

Researchers prospectively analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for a 22-year period. A total of 77,218 women and 47,810 men were included in the analysis, for a total of 2,278,396 person-years of data.

It is not just the sample size of this study that makes it impressive, it is also the thoroughness with which aspartame intake was assessed in comparison to previous studies. Over the course of the study, every two years, participants were given a detailed dietary questionnaire, and their diets were reassessed every four years.

Shockingly, previous studies done on aspartame who revealed no link between aspartame and cancer in humans, only assessed participants’ aspartame intake at one point in time. This poses a major weakness in the accuracy of preview studies.

The combined results of this new study showed that just one 12-fl oz. can (355 ml) of diet soda daily leads to:

• 42% higher leukemia risk in men and women (pooled analysis)
• 102% higher multiple myeloma risk (in men only)
• 31% higher non-Hodgkin  lymphoma risk (in men only)
