The Health Benefits of Smiling

“Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” ~ Mother Teresa

It’s so easy in our everyday lives to become consumed by all the things we have to do, as well as the financial pressures we must endure when money is tight. Feeling down and negative about it all, from time to time strikes all of us, but even when you feel your own stress building up inside you, did you know that perhaps the very best thing you can do is put on a happy face?

Yes, even if it means you have to force a phoney smile.

We feel good whilst smiling and we feel good when we are smiled at. Recently however, studies have shown that the simple, natural act of smiling actually helps our health by lowering our heart rate and relieving our stress levels.

An interesting study from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, required participants to hold a variety of facial expressions while enduring stress-provoking situations. The researchers ... Read entire article

Chia Seeds Reduce Heart Disease Risk

Canadian scientists were intrigued by chia seeds because they are rich in fiber, alpha-linolenic acid and minerals, and wanted to explore their heart health benefits.

In a 12-week study of the health effects of chia for diabetes, researchers at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto fed 21 patients about 37 grams of either chia seeds or wheat bran. The researchers used a new white strain of chia seeds that they had specially developed and named "Salba," in order to control the nutritional content of the seeds.

At the end of the study they found that eating the chia seeds had reduced systolic blood pressure, C-reactive protein and vonWillebrand factor (all risk factors for heart disease). Chia was also found to double blood levels of alpha-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), both essential omega 3 fatty acids with proven heart health benefits.

Humans have used chia for nourishment for over 5,000 years ... Read entire article.

Healthy Benefits for Children in Outdoor Play

The great outdoors is closer than you think.  Your child is one in a million .. Make Them One of 10 Million!

All children should experience the simple pleasures and lasting benefits of spending time outside. Join National Wildlife Federation's mission to get 10 million kids outside for their health & happiness!

The great outdoors is great for kids! Kids today spend an average of 7 hours a day in front of screens and only 30 minutes outside playing. Studies show outdoor time helps children grow lean and strong, enhances imaginations and attention spans, decreases aggression, and boosts classroom performance. In addition, children who spend time in nature regularly are shown to become better stewards of the environment.

Fast Facts About Outdoor Time and Children (Source:

• Children are spending half as much time outdoors as they did 20 years ago. (Juster et al 2004); (Burdette & Whitaker 2005); (Kuo & Sullivan 2001)

• Today, kids 8-18 years old devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes using entertainment media in a typical day (more than 53 hours a week). (Kaiser Family Foundation)

• In a typical week, only 6% of children ages 9-13 play outside on their own. (Children & Nature Network, 2008)

• Children who play outside are more physically active, more creative in their play, less aggressive and show better concentration. (Burdette and Whitaker, 2005; Ginsburg et al., 2007)

• Sixty minutes of daily unstructured free play is essential to children’s physical and mental health. (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2008)

• The most direct route to caring for the environment as an adult is participating in “wild nature activities” before the age of 11. (Wells and Lekies, 2006)

Pesticide Turning Males to Females

Atrazine has already turned male frogs into females that can even produce eggs and offspring.  Read more on the frog research.

Human exposure to atrazine is linked to a number of serious health effects. A potent endocrine disrupter, atrazine interferes with hormonal activity of animals and humans at extremely low doses.

Endocrine Disruption:
The science on atrazine's effects on the hormone system continues to grow. It alters the levels of key hormones in rats and can delay puberty. In male frogs, exposure to atrazine causes a kind of "chemical castration," causing them to develop female sex characteristics. Researchers hypothesize that atrazine singnals the conversion of testosterone to estrogen, demasculinizing the frogs.

Reproductive Effects:
Because atrazine disrupts hormones, it's not surprising that epidemiological studies find associations between exposure to the herbicide and reproductive effects including increased risk of miscarriage, reduced male fertility, low birth weight, increased chance of any birth defect, and higher incidence of abdominal defects.

Evidence for the carcinogenic potential of atrazine is growing — exposure has been linked to elevated risk of breast and prostate cancer. The recent President's Cancel Panel Report notes that atrazine has possible carcinogenic properties. In response to concerns, U.S. EPA is currently re-evaluating atrazine's carcinogenic potential.

Synergystic effects between atrazine and other pesticides may also render health harms more severe.

Atrazine in drinking water
Atrazine is one of the most widely used herbicides in the U.S., and is found in 94% of U.S drinking water tested by the USDA — more often than any other pesticide. An estimated 7 million people were exposed to atrazine in their drinking water between 1998 and 2003.  Read entire article ...

Is Evaporated Cane Juice Better Than Sugar?

Evaporated cane juice is also known as dried cane syrup. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration in 2009 issued guidelines objecting to the term evaporated cane juice because it "falsely suggests the sweeteners are juice." The proper name, says the government, is dried cane syrup.

However, the FDA seems to be missing the point. The average, and even above average, consumer still doesn't have a clue what dried cane syrup is, and might now be misled into thinking that dried cane syrup is a syrup and not just sugar.

Granted it is not-so-white, a-little-less-refined, way-more-expensive sugar, but sugar none the less ... Read the entire article.

Having The Energy To Change

MetaboMax Plus

The difference between healthy and unhealthy energy can be summarized as follows:

Healthy energy is flowing, flexible, dynamic, balanced, soft, associated with positive feelings.

Unhealthy energy is stuck, frozen, rigid, brittle, hard, out of balance, associated with negative emotions. People who can’t find a way to change are entangled in one or more of the qualities just listed.

There are strong indications that energy is more powerful than matter. Studies in longevity, for example, examine why some people live to a healthy old age. Their secret isn’t good genes, diet, not smoking, or even exercise, beneficial as all those things may be.

The highest correlation for reaching ninety or hundred years of age in good shape ... Read the entire article.

Nagging Ruins Even The Healthiest Relationships

The Wall Street Journal recently claimed that nagging — which the WSJ defines as "the interaction in which one person repeatedly makes a request, the other person repeatedly ignores it and both become increasingly annoyed" — is the biggest marriage killer and likely to lead to divorce.

Yikes!  I used to be the biggest nag ever, constantly trailing behind my fiancé, repeatedly telling him to wash the dishes, mop the floor, put his clothes away, etc. He listened less than half the time. After I consciously made the effort to stop ... Read the entire article.

Weight Loss & Thermogenesis

The Science Behind Nature's Sunshine Weight-loss Products

By Dr. William J. Keller with Darlyn Britt

What Is Thermogenesis?

A lot of people define this as fat burning, which is a pretty apt description. But let’s take it a step further. Thermogenesis is the generation of heat in the mitochondria (the cell’s energy factory) due to an uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation.

What does this mean? When food is metabolized in your body, a lot of electrons are produced. As these electrons are processed in the mitochondria, the energy liberated is trapped to form ATP—the cell’s energy currency.

Normally electron processing and ATP formation are coupled, and the ATP produced provides needed cellular energy. When uncoupling occurs, very little ATP is formed. Most of the energy is released as heat.

Free fatty acids from fat cells activate uncoupling and the thermogenic mechanism. Lipolysis, or the breakdown of fat, liberates free fatty acids (hence the name fat burning). The fat disappears and a lot of heat is produced.

Working Together For a Goal

The following natural components of MetaboMax Plus combine to synergistically affect lipolysis, which gives the free fatty acids that spark thermogenesis.

• Synephrine from bitter orange stimulates the release of noradrenaline (or norepinephrine) that binds to receptors on fat cells, causing lipolysis.

• EGCG, the main catechin from green tea, enhances noradrenaline action because it inhibits an enzyme that normally breaks down noradrenaline. • Natural caffeine from guarana and yerba mate interferes with the breakdown of a key mediator in the lipolytic process.

• The other ingredients act together to cause lipolysis and weight loss.

From this we understand that the free fatty acids from lipolysis stimulate uncoupling. This uncoupling results in thermogenesis. So, fat breaks down, the fatty acids cause uncoupling, and foods are oxidized to give only heat, which is dissipated and not used by the body as an energy source. Remember, this process continues at a fairly fast rate as long as the ATP levels are low.

Additional MetaboMax Plus ingredients benefit weight loss by different mechanisms.

• Capsaicin from red pepper decreases appetite through sensory stimulation, as well as binding to the so-called vanilloid receptor. This receptor is important in body temperature regulation.

• Guggulsterones increase the conversion of T4 to the more potent thyroid hormone T3, which is known to stimulate thermogenesis.

• Chickweed interferes with fat absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.

A solid weight loss program should also include a sensible diet and a reasonable exercise program. And of course, determination is a key component.

Cause of Chemical Imbalance & Depression

The concept “chemical imbalance” is a vague concept, and it normally refers to having the wrong amount (too much or too little) of particular brain chemicals (called neurotransmitters) in the brain, which is believed to adversely affect one’s mood and behavior.

For example, the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine are thought to play a major role in people’s moods, such that if there is not the right balance of these chemicals in our brains, then we are susceptible to problems like depression and bipolar disorder.

Researchers say they can show this is true by comparing brain scans of healthy people with scans of depressed (or schizophrenic, etc.) people and see they are different. The problem is that these brain scans only show there’s a difference in brain chemistry between healthy brains and depressed ones; they do not show what CAUSED the difference ... Read the entire article.

Signs and Effects of Stress

The human brain retains a primitive memory that is programmed to cope with every stress in basically the same way as our ancestors coped with saber-toothed tigers.

Most of the time, your cells are occupied with renewal – roughly 90 percent of a cell’s energy normally goes to building new proteins and manufacturing new DNA and RNA. When the brain perceives threat, however, the process of building is set aside.

Whatever you decide to do in fight-or-flight situations, your body needs a massive burst of energy to propel your muscles. To allow this, the normal style of metabolism that builds the body, called anabolic metabolism, converts to its opposite, catabolic metabolism, which breaks down tissues.

Adrenalin launches a cascade of responses – blood pressure rises, muscles tense, breathing becomes shallow and rapid, sexual desire and hunger are suppressed, digestion stops, the brain becomes hyperalert and the senses uncannily clear. Read the entire article.

Writing Relieves Health Symptoms

The Journal of the American Medical Association recently published a clinical study showing that writing can have a big impact on physical symptoms.

Patients suffering from asthma or rheumatoid arthritis were asked to describe the most difficult moments of their lives or simply write down their plans for the day. Four months later, patients who spent just 20 minutes a day for three days in a row writing about their problems felt better, took fewer drugs to relieve their symptoms and saw their doctors less often. If a pill could have such an effect after just three doses, no physician in the world would fail to prescribe it to all her patients.

“Writing is a form of therapy,” English author Graham Greene wrote in his autobiography, Ways of Escape. “Sometimes I wonder how all those who do not write, compose or paint can manage to escape the madness, the melancholia, the panic fear that is inherent in the human situation.” Read the entire article.

10 Ways To Boost Woman's Energy

Women at every age and stage of life can experience low energy, fatigue, and exhaustion. The naturopathic approach to restoring vital energy is to use strategies that address low function in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis is a major part of the neuroendocrine system, which controls reactions to stress and regulates many body processes, including mood and emotions, sexuality, and energy storage and expenditure.

If you’re an otherwise healthy woman, but feel that your energy and vitality aren’t what they could be, here are some energy-boosting behavioral strategies, herbs, and nutrients that can help. Read the entire article.

Electronic Media's Effects on Health

There is an already pervasive and rapidly expanding force of disease that no doubt affects you on a daily basis. It is a potentially harmful force that many people, quite frankly, cannot resist and may actively seek exposure to like an unknowing addict.

I am talking about electronic media which includes the news media, television, social media, email, and the internet in general. Many will, of course, immediately argue that electronic media is not all harmful and point to its many efficiently informative and individually empowering aspects.

While this is most certainly true, discussions regarding the benefits of electronic media are highly prevalent. Most individuals need little persuasion to agree that this tantalizing technology is generally positive or even some type of utopian catalyst.

In contrast, I believe the harmful power of this technology is severely overlooked or denied, leading to a dangerously positive and careless attitude toward its use. The negative impacts of electronic media are extremely broad (just as broad as its positive impacts), including significant environmental, social, political, and economic effects. To keep this essay brief, however, I'll focus mainly on individual health effects.  Read the article.

6 Simple New Year's Health Goals

In the memoir, "What the River Knows," Wayne Fields writes this nursery rhyme:
“The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet.

These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind they'll ease
Your will they'll mend
And charge you not a shilling.”

-- Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields,
What the River Knows, 1990”

Fields' book was a beautiful and poignant memoir; a meditation on families and aging, and a whimsical response to what time, and streams, and those we care about bring into our lives.

In the nursery rhyme, he struck a simple chord for anyone searching for health and well-being. He mentions 6 simple doctors: sunshine, water, rest, air, exercise and diet. Improving on even just one of them would be a noble, and reachable, resolution for the New Year. We examine each one below:

Get More Sunshine

Now, we're not talking about tanning. With the Sun, there can definitely be too much of a good thing. However, that fiery ball of radiation that climbs into the sky every morning can be just as good for your health as it is damaging.

"Being out in the sun boosts our mood, improves sleep, and promotes vitamin D production," says James Spencer, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York. "There's no controversy about that."

An article in U.S. News says the Sun can help you get better sleep; can make you happier by increasing serotonin (psychiatrists often recommend that depressed people spend 30 minutes of the day in the sun); may give you protection from autoimmune diseases and asthma; and can lesson the symptoms of Alzheimer's.

Drink More Water and Eat More Water-Based Foods

There might be too many benefits of drinking water to list here. But some of the benefits as cited by MindBodyGreen include: increased energy, promote wieght loss, flushes out toxins, improves skin, aids digestion, supports the immune system, a natural headache remedy, prevents cramps, much cheaper than flavored drinks. A six-year study also suggests that people who drink more than 5 glasses of water per day were 41% less likely to die from a heart attack than people who drank less than 2 glasses per day.
But aside from drinking more water, don't forget putting more water-based foods into your diet. The more fruits and vegetables you consume, the more nutrition you'll get and the better you'll feel.

Get More Rest

A recent survey found that more people are sleeping less than six hours a night, and sleep difficulties visit 75% of us at least a few nights per week. A short-lived bout of insomnia is generally nothing to worry about. The bigger concern is chronic sleep loss, which can contribute to health problems such as weight gain, high blood pressure, and a decrease in the immune system’s power, reports the Harvard Women’s Health Watch.

The Harvard Women’s Health Watch also says a good night sleep supports learning and memory; metabolism and healthy weight; safety and better performance in daily tasks; a better mood; cardiovascular health; and a strong immune system. Go here for more information on herbs and natural supplements that support rest and relaxation

Breathe Better and Get More Oxygen

Oxygen is arguably the most important substance for our health. If we run out of it, we'll die in minutes. It's important we get enough oxygen to keep our body and organs functioning correctly.

We breathe more than 20,000 times a day. It is the first thing we do when we are born and the last thing we do when we die, so it makes sense to become good at breathing. Soldiers master different types of breathing to perform in life or death situations -- whether it's to calm down, to increase endurance or to wake up and have more energy. In yoga, correct breathing is not just crucial to supply the various organs enough oxygen, but to also to help rid the body of waste and toxins.

Oxygen is critical to our well-being, and any effort to increase the supply of oxygen to our body -- and especially to the brain -- will pay rich dividends.

Get More Exercise

The benefits of exercise are obvious: stronger muscles and bones, a healthier immune system, better weight, higher metabolism, stress relief, warding off depression, etc. But it also might make you smarter. A recent article in the New York Times claims that the size of the human mind increased over time because of the necessity of exercise for early humans.

"The broad point of this new notion is that if physical activity helped to mold the structure of our brains, then it most likely remains essential to brain health today," says John D. Polk, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and co-author, with Dr. Raichlen, of the new article. "And there is scientific support for that idea. Recent studies have shown, he says, that 'regular exercise, even walking,' leads to more robust mental abilities, 'beginning in childhood and continuing into old age.'”

There seems to be a direct, and even an evolutionary, correlation between a healthy body and a healthy mind. This gives an even more powerful incentive to be active in 2013.

Eat More Whole Foods

Diet and exercise are probably the top two resolution goals made every New Year's. But, instead of a diet plan that is doomed to fail, it might be more realistic to focus on eating better.
Eat more natural foods, more vegetables, more nuts, more fruits, more lean protein, more essential fatty acids like fish and avacados, and make sure to get the right herbal and vitamin supplements to fill in the holes.  Don't eat processed foods, refined flours, conventional frozen meals, and cured meats with byproducts. Instead, eat more whole foods that are as close to nature as possible, including high-fat foods grown the way nature intended. If you have difficulty getting enough whole foods, consider shakes like Nature's Harvest, which is full of vegetable protein.

Change Your Routine to Boost Your Mood

 ... a routine can become a rut.

If we don’t have to think about what to have for breakfast, we won’t notice the details that make up our lives, even small things…like what things taste like, the feeling of the icy coffee as it hits the straw, the whiteness of the stairs, etc.

So, a goal in changing up a few things in your daily routine is to encourage yourself to be more engaged and mindful in the moment; to ... Read the entire article.

The fat-binding properties of fiber from guar gum and psyllium hulls interfere with the absorption of the emulsified fat from the small intestine. The bound fat molecules are then eliminated.  Unlike some other types of fiber, guar gum does not affect mineral absorption. However, this fiber does slow down sugar absorption, which helps to maintain blood sugar levels already within the normal range. It also swells with fluid intake, promoting a feeling of satiety.  This product is gluten-free.
