Sleeping Pills Called Risky as Cigarettes

From WebMd.com

A provocative new study finds that people who take prescription sleeping pills -- even once in a while -- have a higher death risk than non-users.

The top third of sleeping-pill users had a 5.3-fold higher death risk. They also had a 35% higher risk of cancer, the study found.

"We are not certain. But it looks like sleeping pills could be as risky as smoking cigarettes. It looks much more dangerous to take these pills than to treat insomnia another way," study leader Daniel F. Kripke, MD, tells WebMD.

The sleeping pills in question are known as hypnotics. They include newer drugs such as zolpidem (the best known brand name is Ambien) as well as older drugs such as temazepam (the best known brand name is Restoril).

Hypnotic sleeping pills actually cause a person to fall asleep. This sets them apart from other sleeping aids, such as the supplement melatonin, which promote sleep through relaxation.

Other sleep drugs described as hypnotics by Kripke and colleagues include eszopiclone (Lunesta), zaleplon (Sonata), triazolam (Halcion), flurazepam (Dalmane), barbiturates, and older antihistamines such as diphenhydramine. Read the entire article.

First ‘Test-Tube’ Hamburger On Its Way

The world’s first “test-tube” meat, a hamburger made from a cow’s stem cells, will be produced this fall, Dutch scientist Mark Post told a major science conference on Sunday.

Post’s aim is to invent an efficient way to produce skeletal muscle tissue in a laboratory that exactly mimics meat, and eventually replace the entire meat-animal industry.

The ingredients for his first burger are “still in a laboratory phase,” he said, but by fall “we have committed ourselves to make a couple of thousand of small tissues, and then assemble them into a hamburger.”  Read the entire article.

Sinus Infection? Antibiotics Won't Help

From CNN

Roughly 20% of the antibiotic prescriptions written in the United States for adults each year are for sinus infections. That's an impressive statistic, given that doctors and public health officials have long doubted that antibiotics can successfully treat the condition.

A new study, published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, appears to confirm those doubts: The antibiotic amoxicillin was no better than placebo at improving the congestion, cough, runny nose, pain, and other symptoms that accompany sinus infections (also known as acute sinusitis), researchers found.

"Compared to placebo, amoxicillin doesn't seem to provide any benefits," says lead author Jane Garbutt, an associate professor at the Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis. "In terms of patient satisfaction, side effects, symptom relief, days missed from work, et cetera, we did not see any difference." Read the entire article.

“B” Smart for Brain Health

By Suzanne Dixon, MPH, MS, RD

From misplaced car keys to the forgotten name of a new acquaintance, “senior moments” affect all of us from time to time. Fortunately, there may be something we can do to sharpen our brains as we age. Even better, this small action—making sure we get enough of certain B vitamins—may be particularly helpful for those affected by depression, a condition that can negatively affect brain performance.'

Boosting the brain

To study how folic acid and vitamin B12 affect brain function, researchers randomly selected 909 older adults with symptoms of depression to receive a supplement providing 400 mcg of folic acid and 100 mcg of vitamin B12 or a placebo (no vitamins) pill. Participants completed phone questionnaires and tests to measure their thinking (cognitive) function at the beginning of the study and 12 and 24 months later.

Compared with the group not taking folic acid and vitamin B12, certain measures of thinking function significantly improved in those who received supplements:

• Overall score on a test of cognitive function.
• Immediate memory, which is the ability to remember small amounts of information over a few seconds to minutes.
• Delayed memory, which is the ability to remember events or information after a time delay or from the past.

There were no differences between the groups in other aspects of cognitive function, such as attention and processing speed.

This study suggests older adults with symptoms of depression may benefit from a folic acid and vitamin B12 supplement, but these vitamins will not work miracles by themselves. In addition to getting your “Bs,” there are many things you can do keep your brain sharp as you age.

Seek support. If you feel down, depressed, or unable to enjoy your life, talk to your doctor. It may feel hard to accept help, but depression can be a medical condition, just like diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. You’d accept medical care for these issues, and you should for mental health too.

Manage total health. If you have other chronic health conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes, make sure you’re taking medications as prescribed and following your doctor’s advice about other self-care measures. These conditions not only affect blood flow in the body, they can affect blood flow to your brain. Poor blood flow means poorer brain function.

Get social. Having an active social life is associated with better brain function. Feeling part of a group and enjoying common interests improves health, especially as we age.

Volunteer. “It’s better to give than to get” is never truer than when it comes to brain health. Volunteering improves both physical and mental health. Find a cause you’re passionate about—walking dogs at the local shelter, serving meals in a soup kitchen, visiting with the homebound—and lend a hand.

Move more. If possible, get some physical activity every day. Even 30 minutes of walking is enough to improve brain and body health.

Suzanne Dixon, MPH, MS, RD, an author, speaker, and internationally recognized expert in chronic disease prevention, epidemiology, and nutrition, has taught medical, nursing, public health, and alternative medicine coursework. She has delivered over 150 invited lectures to health professionals and consumers and is the creator of a nutrition website acclaimed by the New York Times and Time magazine. Suzanne received her training in epidemiology and nutrition at the University of Michigan, School of Public Health at Ann Arbor.

Medical Tests Overused & Dangerous

The American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation urged changes in the use of 45 common medical tests, declaring that they are costly, unnecessary, and are subjecting patients to possible harm.

"Only one thing should motivate what a doctor does — the best interest of the patient," says Dr. Erika Schwartz. "Unfortunately, there are two things that motivate doctors in the present culture: profit and defense — self-defense from malpractice."

For instance, a simple, non-invasive stool test is the preferred screening method by the American College of Gastroenterology, yet many doctors recommend a costly, uncomfortable colonoscopy instead. "People end up with colostomy bags because their colon was destroyed during a colonoscopy, but no one talks about that," says Dr. Schwartz. "But the price difference to a doctor can be $3 and $500." Obese Children Outgrowing Clothing & Furniture Sizes

From CNN

In middle school, Taylor LeBaron struggled to fit into his seat. The desks in class had a ceramic plate attached to the chair.

"I was so large, I couldn't fit in there," said LeBaron, now 19. "Every other student could. I couldn't get my legs to fit underneath the desk or my stomach to fit between the chair without getting the desk stuck with me.
"It was really embarrassing. When class is over, everyone gets up, I would take a few minutes extra, tactfully maneuvering out without looking like a fool."

But LeBaron, who weighed nearly 300 pounds at age 14, never requested a separate table and chair because he didn't want to draw more attention to himself.

As children are getting bigger, their clothing, their furniture and other objects that support their weight must also expand.

Seventeen percent of children are obese, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And one in three kids is obese or overweight. The rate of childhood obesity has tripled to the point that pediatricians say growth charts no longer apply to today's kids. Read the entire article.

According to the American Heart Association, 50 percent of middle-aged Americans have dangerously high levels of blood cholesterol, a contributing factor to the high rate of cardiovascular disease in the U.S.

Scientific research has shown that cutting down on fats and increasing the amount of soluble fiber in the diet can significantly reduce these levels. But getting enough soluble fiber into the diet can be a problem. Most foods only contain small amounts. Even oat bran is a mere 7 percent soluble fiber.

Cellular Energy & Cardiovascular Health

As technology advances, we learn more about the human body and how it works. We also gather details about how supplements are utilized in the body. This type of advancement can lead to innovative change and newer, better products, like Nature's Sunshine's Co-Q10 50 mg softgels.

Our 50 mg crystalfree liquid is equivalent to 400 mg of co-Q10 powder. Are you getting your money’s worth?

Co-Q10 is a vitamin-like substance present in every cell in the body. It is vital for cellular energy, cardiovascular health and longevity. Co-Q10 helps reduce oxidative stress in all cells throughout the body and especially contributes to the health of the heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas. Usually after age 30, the body’s production of Co-Q10 declines, which creates a need for supplementation in some people.

Co-Q10 material is often found in a crystalline state, which is less-absorbable by the body and not as likely to have the optimal cellular energy, cardiovascular health and longevity benefits.

Some manufacturers begin their processes with a crystalfree form of Co-Q10. But after processing, the Co-Q10 re-crystallizes inside their softgel capsule. To avoid this, certain manufacturers use solvents in their products. But these solvents may interfere with absorption or cause other issues.

Nature’s Sunshine’s patented lipid blend

Nature’s Sunshine’s new formula uses a patented lipid blend to keep Co-Q10 from crystallizing and yields maximum bioavailability. Therefore, giving you the most cellular energy, cardiovascular health and longevity for your money. Take 1 softgel with a meal daily for circulatory support.

Our Most Bioavailable Co-Q10 Yet!

Ours is up to eight times more absorbable than the crystal version! A double-blind human clinical trial showed that Nature’s Sunshine’s Co-Q10 50 mg was at least eight times more readily absorbed than competing products.

Our 50 mg crystalfree liquid is equivalent to 400 mg of co-Q10 powder. Are you getting your money’s worth?

FDA to Review Safety of Caffeine Product

From CNN

The inventor touts AeroShot as caffeine without the coffee, soda, tea or a pill, but a U.S. lawmaker questions whether it's safe.

The product comes in a lipstick-shaped dispenser that puffs out a powdery mixture of caffeine and B vitamins into your mouth, where it dissolves and is swallowed.

Pre-filled devices can be purchased online or in convenience stores in New York and Boston for about $3.

"No calories. No liquid. No limits," its website says. "Hitting the books. Hitting the gym. Taking a roadtrip. Staying awake at your desk after devouring a bacon double cheeseburger at lunch. AeroShot is specifically designed with you in mind."

But New York's Sen. Charles Schumer said he has some concerns.
"This product could be very dangerous," Schumer said. "There might be legitimate uses. The business man staying up late who doesn't want to drink that cup of coffee, that's OK. But what about kids who go to bars and take several shots of AeroShot so they can drink more?" Read the entire article.

Alternative Treatments for High Cholesterol

From WebMd.com

There are alternative treatments for lowering cholesterol naturally. But before you add any supplement or alternative therapy to your diet, talk to your doctor. Some supplements may interact with other medication you may be taking or have dangerous side effects.

Some of the herbal and nutritional supplements said to lower cholesterol include:

Garlic: According to some studies, garlic may decrease blood levels of total cholesterol by a few percentage points.

Other studies, however, suggest that it may not be as beneficial as once thought. It may also have significant side effects and/or interactions with certain medications. Garlic may prolong bleeding and blood clotting time, so garlic and garlic supplements should not be consumed prior to surgery and should not be taken with blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin).

Guggulipid: Guggulipid is the gum resin of the mukul myrrh tree. In clinical studies performed in India, guggulipid significantly reduced blood levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. The enthusiasm for using guggulipid as a cholesterol-lowering herbal agent, however, diminished after the publication of negative results from a clinical trial in the U.S. Further research is necessary to determine the safety and efficacy of this herb.

Red Yeast Rice: Red yeast rice has been found to lower cholesterol in studies and was previously found in the over-the-counter supplement Cholestin.

However, in 2001, FDA took Cholestin off the shelf because it contained lovastatin, a compound found in the cholesterol prescription medication Mevacor. Reformulated "Cholestin" no longer contains red yeast rice. Other red yeast rice-containing supplements currently available in U.S. contain very small amounts of lovastatin. Their effectiveness is questionable. Read the entire article.

Thyroid and Congestive Heart Failure

From MedicalOnly.com

The human endocrine system is an extremely complicated biological mechanism. The regulation of hormone levels in our bodies can impact virtually every aspect of our physical and mental health, and when things go awry in this system, the consequences can be devastating.

Many men and women diagnosed with thyroid disorders often have a deep-seated understanding of the broad impact of these health problems. Indeed, in the eyes of patients dealing with a thyroid diagnosis, it can often seem like there are very few health factors that thyroid problems can't cause.

Out of the full range of associated symptoms and health problems that have been linked to thyroid disorders, one stands out as particularly serious -- congestive heart failure.

In recent decades, a number of prominent studies have established correlations between thyroid problems and an increased risk of developing congestive heart failure. Take a closer look at this subject.

Common Organic Sweetener May Boost Arsenic Levels

From MedicineNet.com

Organic brown rice syrup, a popular sweetener in organic and gluten-free foods -- including some formulas made for toddlers -- is a source of the toxin arsenic, a new study shows.

Experts say regularly eating foods that use organic brown rice syrup as a main ingredient could expose a person to more arsenic than the government allows in drinking water, raising the risks for cancer and heart disease. In young children, chronic arsenic exposure has been linked to lower IQs and poorer intellectual function. Read the entire article.

New Car Smell - 275 Chemicals

From WebMd.com

A new study suggests that new car smell comes from toxic chemicals off-gassing in a car’s interior, like brominated flame retardants (BFRs), chromium, and lead. In all, researchers identified more than 275 different chemicals in vehicle interiors, including those associated with birth defects, impaired learning, liver problems, and cancer.

The 2012 new vehicle study from the nonprofit Ecology Center analyzed the chemical content of more than 200 new cars for its top 10 healthy and unhealthy car interiors. The higher the vehicle rating in the study, the higher the level of these chemicals was, based on their testing methods.

At the top of the list for the most healthy car interior is the 2012 Honda Civic. Read the entire article.

Guide to Fixing Back Pain

From CNN

The back is literally your body's support system, made up of more than 30 bones and hundreds of nerves, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. But all those moving parts mean it's vulnerable to problems, too.

"Women are particularly susceptible to pain because they lug around extra weight every day, from purses and grocery bags to a kid on their hip," says Heidi Prather, D.O., chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Plus, many of us have gained weight and lost the time to exercise over the years, weakening our back muscles. Is it any wonder that almost five million women each year see doctors due to low back pain?

Luckily, back issues are easier to resolve than you may think. Use this guide to pinpoint what's causing yours, so you get the right treatment, fast -- and prevent future flare-ups.

New Therapy For Plantar Fasciitis

From MedicineNet.com

For people struggling with plantar fasciitis -- a painful and sometimes disabling foot condition -- a small, preliminary study suggests that a new type of therapy is more effective than standard cortisone injections in restoring mobility.

So-called "platelet-rich plasma" therapy is injected directly into the foot. It harnesses two main ingredients found in blood -- plasma and platelets -- to promote inflammation, connective-tissue growth and vascular healing. This contrasts with cortisone injections, which are designed to reduce inflammation.

"The focus here is on very difficult patients for whom well-recognized nonsurgical and surgical approaches are not effective," said study author Dr. Raymond Monto, an orthopedic surgeon with Nantucket Cottage Hospital in Nantucket, Mass. "Because while 90 percent of patients usually get better with standard treatment, about 10 percent don't. Read the entire article.
