Taming the Holiday Sugar Monster

By Steven Horne, RH(AHG)

The holidays are upon us, beginning with Halloween. This is a wonderful time of year, yet most of us overindulge in desserts, candies and other treats, only to regret it later.

At the end of October, millions of children roam the neighborhood trick or treating in an effort to collect as many sugar-laden treats as possible. It’s fun to play the role of goblins, ghosts and monsters, but drowning our bodies in refined sugar is what's really scary.

Part of the problem is that candy and desserts are so easily accessible to us. This was not the case for our grandparents and great grandparents. In the old days, people had to go outside to pick berries or other fruits, collect honey from beehives and risk getting stung, or collect tree sap and boil it down for hours to make maple syrup. This discouraged most people from making candy and desserts except on special occasions such as holidays and birthdays.

Today, we’ve learned how to refine and concentrate the natural sugars in certain foods—stripping them of their vitamin and mineral content to create empty calories. Sugar is now isolated, cheap and plentiful, and what was once an occasional treat is now a daily staple for many of us. This has had a devastating effect on human health, particularly in the form of diabetes.

Diabetes – Epidemic and Increasing

Diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States and is affecting an increasingly large portion of the population. It is directly linked with the excessive consumption of refined sugars and other simple carbohydrates. Sugar consumption and a pre-diabetic metabolism also play a role in the development of heart disease and cancer.

Excessive consumption of sugar and simple carbs has also led to an epidemic of obesity, learning disabilities and behavioral problems, as well as tooth decay and gum disease. For all the “fun” and “comfort” they provide, sugar and simple carbs often end in horror stories.

According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes affects 23.6 million people in the United States—nearly 8% of the population! Another 51 million people are pre-diabetic. Diabetes is also becoming more prevalent in children, along with obesity from high carb diets.

Unfortunately, the diabetes epidemic has spread beyond America’s shores and created a global health crisis.  According to the International Diabetes Federation, diagnosed cases of diabetes have increased from 30 million to 246 million in the past twenty years.

Breaking our addiction to sugar isn’t easy, but if we really want to enjoy better health we can do it. Fortunately, herbs and nutritional supplements can help in our battle to balance our blood sugar. We’ve posted the following handouts at, which cover a variety of formulas that can be helpful for diabetes and blood sugar issues. Just click on the link to read more about any formula or single herb.

Formulas for Balancing Blood Sugar

Target P-14 contains zinc and chromium chelated to specific amino acids that deliver these minerals to the pancreas and aid insulin production. They are found in the same base of herbs as the Pro-Pancreas blend, a traditional formula containing goldenseal and other herbs that help to normalize metabolism in diabetes. Target P-14 is an especially good choice for reducing the amount of insulin required to manage type 2 diabetes.

SugarReg® contains the minerals chromium and vanadium in a base of herbs that help overcome insulin resistance. One of these herbs is gymnema, a plant that has been used for thousands of years in India for treating diabetes. When chewed, gymnema blocks the sugar taste buds, making sugar taste like sand. In the intestines, gymnema blocks the absorption of sugar, reducing blood sugar levels. SugarReg also contains banaba, bitter melon, nopal and fenugreek, which have all been shown to help lower blood sugar levels.

Since India is the birthplace of diabetes, no system of medicine has been treating diabetes longer than Ayurveda. Ayurvedic Blood Sugar formula is a traditional diabetic formula from Ayurvedic medicine. Like SugarReg, the key herb in this blend is gymnema, which inhibits sugar absorption in the small intestines. It also helps regulate sugar metabolism in the liver.

Another traditional Western blend for diabetes is PBS, which contains goldenseal and cedar berries. The famous herbalist John Christopher discovered that cedar berries lower blood sugar levels by accident when one of his clients took them instead of the juniper berries he had recommended.

Editor's Note:
Personally I boycott Halloween, believing it does more evil than good, but it is the beginning of the Fall/Winter sickly season and sugar has a lot to do with weakening the immune system.

Mental Disorders- Result of Neuroinflammation?

New research is increasingly finding that not only are many cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia related to inflammation among brain tissues, but classic mental diseases such as schizophrenia and depression may also be connected to brain inflammation.

Recent research from Japan's Kyushu University Medical School and Saga University have been revealing that many mental disorders are produced by inflammation involving the microglia cells of the brain. What are microglia?

Studies Show Microwaves Drastically Reduce Nutrients In Food

The industry has claimed that microwave cooking protects the nutrient content of foods. Somehow, in tasting foods that came out of a microwave oven, the texture was changed as was the flavor. Foods cooked or reheated in microwave ovens became rubbery and lacked the savory smells and layered flavors that come from cooking foods slower and longer.

Nevertheless, people bought the convenience aspect, the speed, the simplicity of heating and eating prepared foods. The science, which has been supported by the food industry, has continued to claim the health benefits of microwave cooking.

Recently, published data from reliable sources questions the health benefits of microwaved food. Does this mean an occasional microwaved meal will be harmful? Not likely. But what about a steady diet of eating foods cooked at such a high heat?

Do the sensitive compounds in food, such as amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and phytonutrients change? It appears so. Read on ...

Why You Can Trust Nature's Sunshine Products Chinese Formulas For Potency, Purity and Safety

By Lynda Hammons, Vice President, Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs

The popularity of Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) is on the rise. Globally, hundreds of millions of dollar are spent on TCM products each year. In the US, more than 1 million people annually use Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Nature’s Sunshine’s TCM products have a clear quality advantage over the competition. We spend millions of dollars each year on Quality Control testing, which involves 3 critical areas:
  • True identification of raw materials so you can be assured the correct genus and species of plant is used.
  • Distinguishing between the regions of origin of the plants so we can be confident that the optimum actives in the correct amounts are always present in each lot.
  • 600 different tests and procedures for contamination, purity, potency and safety.

In truth, this could be a scary time to take herbal supplements from just any company. With tremendous growth in the industry, many companies with little experience are trying to produce herbal supplements without our same model of testing the products.

Anyone can encapsulate them and package them with professional-looking labels to make a "nice-looking" product. These companies aren't required to be tested for purity, safety or potency.

We recently tested several other competitors’ TCM products in our quality labs. The results were surprising.
  • Three competitors’ products tested positive for aristolochic acids. The FDA has warned consumers against taking products that contain aristolochic acids, because they have been associated with permanent kidney damage as well as certain types of cancers.
  • One competitor’s product tested high for lead content.
  • One had microbial contamination.
  • We also tested five brands of cordyceps products alongside NSP Cordyceps. We found that NSP Cordyceps had the highest combination of cordycepic acid and adenosine per capsule.

While not every competitor had bad results, the evidence shows you probably want to think twice before choosing just any supplement.

Because we produce and test our own products, we don't have to rely on third parties. Our strict and comprehensive testing for POTENCY, PURITY AND SAFETY allows you to be 100% confident that Nature’s Sunshine TCM formulas are the very best.

Memory Lapses That Are Normal

Maybe it starts with simply forgetting something. You can't remember the route to a restaurant you've been to many times before or the birthday present a friend gave you a month ago. Then comes the worry. Is your forgetfulness a sign of something serious, like Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia?

Don't remember where you left your keys? Counter normal memory lapses by improving mental focus. Such brain freezes happen to most of us, to different degrees, as we age. Even experienced public speakers have their "Oops" moments, when a word or term they use on a daily basis simply refuses to come to mind.

While such common memory lapses are frustrating, they don't necessarily mean Alzheimer's is at the door. If your lapses aren't disrupting your life, there's no need to be actively worried, experts say. Read the entire article.

Women's Health

Key Products for Women’s Health
by Darlyn Britt

Many women will face interesting health challenges in their lives. Some of these challenges respond well to natural supplements. We’ve spotlighted six products for women’s health.

Natural Changes
The female body is a dynamic machine, constantly changing throughout life. In their fifth decade of life, most women will encounter physical and emotional changes. Their nutritional needs also change to reflect shortages that naturally occur. Finding balance is the key.

Natural Changes is a pack of supplements that provides essential nutrients for the maturing female body. It is composed of five NSP formulas:

C-X provides herbal support for the reproductive glands of mature women. (2 capsules)
Wild Yam & Chaste Tree nourishes the female reproductive system. (1 capsule)
Super GLA provides a generous amount of essential omega-6 fatty acids, which can be converted into eicosanoids—hormone-like compounds that regulate many important bodily functions and processes, including heart health, already-normalrange blood pressure maintenance and hormonal responses. (1 softgel)
Skeletal Strength® contains minerals and other building blocks the body can use to manufacture bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and skin. These nutrients counteract many of the forces that rob the structural system of strength and flexibility. (1 tablet)
Nutri-Calm® supports the nervous system under stress, by providing generous amounts of B-vitamins in a base of herbs known to support optimal nervous system health. (1 tablet)

Natural Changes supports the female glandular system, helps the mature female body balance hormones, provides essential nutrients for the structural system and aids the body under stress. Don’t overlook these products for women’s health.

This formula contains black cohosh, an herb known for its support of the mature woman’s body. Flash-Ease is a timed-release formula, providing natural support all day or all night long. The noted Chinese herb dong quai enhances this formula, as it too provides glandular system support for women.

Female Comfort
Female Comfort is a unique herbal formulation that supports a woman’s reproductive system. It combines 10 herbs known for their benefits to the female body. For example, red raspberry leaves nutritionally support the entire female reproductive system.

Blessed thistle is regarded as important for female reproductive organs. Marshmallow root is beneficial to the urinary system.  Black cohosh root is used by many women during and after menopause and is known to aid the structural and muscular systems.  Dong quai root benefits the circulatory, nervous and immune systems. It is also known to aid muscle, joint and skin elements of the structural system.  Female Comfort also contains ginger rhizome, licorice root and Queen of the Meadow leaves.

Cranberry & Buchu Concentrate
Cranberry is more than just a Thanksgiving dinner garnish. It provides powerful support for a healthy urinary tract. Studies show that cranberry juice contains substances that support urinary tract health. Buchu herb has a powerful aroma, not unlike camphor, that makes it beneficial for urinary system health.

Don’t overlook these additional products for women’s health.

Breast Assured
Every woman is concerned with breast health, and most women have a friend or family member who has dealt with breast health issues.

NSP Breast Assured is a blend of herbs and nutrients that support and protect the female reproductive system, including the breasts. The active compounds and metabolites that compose this formula act as antioxidants, help block estrogen receptors and boost immune stimulation. Breast Assured also supports a balanced hormonal profile and may improve the menopausal experience for some women experiencing normal physical and emotional changes.

Key ingredients include flax seed meal (promotes a healthy balance of estrogen levels in the body), ellagic acid from pomegranate fruit (shown to have chemo-protective properties) and maitake mushroom (stimulates immune system activity). Also contains calcium glucarate, kudzu root extract and lutein.

Super GLA
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) provides support to the female glandular system, particularly before menstruation. Super GLA combines three oils: evening primrose, black currant and borage to provide generous amounts of essential omega-6 fatty acids. In the body, these can be converted into eicosanoids. Three important eicosanoids include prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes. This group of hormone-like compounds regulates many important bodily functions and processes and may affect circulatory system health, skin and joint health, and immunity and nerve function. Super GLA provides nutritional support to the female reproductive system, particularly before menstruation when normal conditions of mild mood changes, breast tenderness, cramps and swelling can occur. Provides 130 mg of gamma-linolenic acid per capsule.

Protect Brain From Aging with Plant Polyphenols

Aging is only second to obesity as a health concern of global proportions. Aging is essentially the diminished capacity of our internal systems to repair themselves which correlates with the number of years we count.

How does aging relate to brain and mental abilities? Aging and stress reduce the rate of production of new brain cells. For a long time, it was thought that brain cells are “terminally” developed and differentiated and lose the ability to divide and produce new brain cells.

This view is challenged by evidence that two areas of the brain are capable of cell division and they continue to produce new brain cells in the adult brain as well. One of these areas is a part of the hippocampus, the organ associated with memory and the other is a part of the lower brain.

Aging, stress, life-changing trauma and substance abuse are factors that have a negative impact on these areas of the brain. These external insults cause a reduction in the rate of regeneration of brain cells as well as reduce the capability of nerve cells to form new connections with other cells.

The net result of these processes is a reduction in cognitive and behavioral abilities. Read the entire article for food suggestions that help.

When Eating Healthy Becomes Unhealthy

Filling your grocery cart with organic vegetables and whole grains is a smart way to personally combat the nation’s obesity epidemic. Yet for some people, a dedication to eating “right” can cross a line into a disorder called orthorexia.

Unlike anorexia, an eating disorder characterized by consuming too few calories, orthorexia is a preoccupation with the quality of food, rather than the quantity, and the condition can have severe mental and physical repercussions.

The disorder often begins with a real desire to improve health, says Maria Rago, Ph.D., vice president of the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD). People stop eating white flour or processed foods, and aim for organic produce and whole grains. Such healthy practices should be applauded, but when restrictions become so severe—cutting out fats or salt or food groups—you put yourself at risk for nutrient deficiencies or other problems.

The physical consequences of orthorexia are real, but what distinguishes the disorder from healthy eating is obsessive and compulsive behavior. “How preoccupied someone is about eating the right thing, that’s the measure of orthorexia,” says Rago. Read the entire article.

Breakfast Has a Lot of Influence on Your Health

Like most people, chances are you’ve heard time and time again that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” and, like most people, you’re probably even willing to concede that that’s true. However, while many people acknowledge the importance of a good breakfast, very few actually partake in the first meal of the day.

The fact of the matter is that, no matter how many times you’ve heard it, it isn’t just a saying: It’s a scientific fact.

Research shows that breakfast affects everything, from your ability to perform at school to your ability to fit into your tightest jeans. Studies on breakfast show that eating a good, balanced breakfast boosts success and also promotes mental acuity.

In fact, breakfast eaters statistically have better grades and are more likely to graduate. Eating breakfast also helps reduce cravings for sugary food throughout the rest of the day, and boosts your metabolism to boot.

The following infographic examines the notion that if you’re a breakfast skipper, you may want to rethink your morning routine.

Menopause Relief - October Specials

Approximately 40 million women in America are nearing or are currently experiencing menopause. But there are options and remedies to help women manage their symptoms to be more comfortable as they go through these changes. October for Nature's Sunshine is "Women's Health Month" and they're having specials on supplements for women.

Managing the Change, Menopause Relief

Estrogen and progesterone, two primary hormones in the female body, need to work in harmony to perform their many and complex regulatory functions. As women age, levels of these unique hormones become imbalanced as the body produces much less of them.

Symptoms of this imbalance can include hot flashes, night sweats, moodiness, low libido, irritability and more. During this challenging transitional phase of life, women can try a variety of medications and natural means to help restore balance.

Somewhere between age 45–55, most women begin peri-menopause, a prelude to official menopause, which, by definition, is the time when a woman has naturally ceased having menstrual periods for one year.

Nutrients that Can Support the Changing, Mature Female Body

Essential fatty acids like Omega-3 and Flaxseed Oil can be converted into eicosanoids—hormone-like compounds that regulate many important bodily functions and processes, including heart health, already-normal-range blood pressure maintenance and hormonal responses.

As we age, many forces rob the structural system of strength and flexibility. Calcium, magnesium and vitamin D can help bones and muscles stay strong and flexible.

B vitamins support the nervous system under stress. And if your body’s all freaked out, you’re stressed out.

Black Cohosh herb has been used for decades by women who want to keep cool during menopause.

Soy foods like tofu and edamame contain phytoestrogens, hormone-like compounds that can help balance hormone levels in the body. One group of these compounds, isoflavonoids, is found in abundance in soybeans and other soy products. Studies show that isoflavonoids can help improve estrogen levels.

Wild Yam root helps balance the female glandular system and is widely used to support menopausal women. It contains diosgenin, a steroidal saponin that is used commercially to produce steroid hormones.

Hot Flash Relief

Fact: 80–90% of menopausal women in North America experience hot flashes. Some up to 15 times a day.

A hot flash is a brief sensation of heat that may include a red face, sweating, rapid heart rate or chills. When these occur at night, they are called night sweats. Hot flashes happen when blood vessels near the skin’s surface expand to help cool the body. Hot flashes are the most frequent symptom of menopause and peri-menopause.

Tips for Taking the Heat out of Hot Flashes

• Avoid certain triggers that may bring on hot flashes more frequently or cause them to be more severe. These include stress, caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, tight clothing, heat and cigarette smoke.

• Keep your bedroom cool at night and dress in light clothing.

• Practice slow, abdominal breathing.

• Keep moving! Walk, swim, dance or ride a bike.

• Use a cool pillow.

Drinking in Pregnancy Affects Child's Growth

Children who had significant prenatal exposure to alcohol may have delayed weight gain during infancy and alcohol-related growth restriction from early infancy until 9 years of age, researchers report.

Weight, height and head circumference are indications of brain growth, the study authors pointed out. Persistent reductions in these measurements among children exposed to alcohol in the womb suggest the effects may be permanent and could affect their mental development, according to the study published online Aug. 15 and in the November print issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research. Human Experiment & New Diseases

From Green Med Info

In Kansas, for instance, an experimental 3200 acres of GMO rice have been planted with inserted DNA from human organs.

GMO's were approved in the US without undergoing long term tests to determine if they were safe for human consumption. The rats that were fed GMO food didn't do too well; they either died, or lived with horrible distended intestines and misery. Yet, due to the lack of required labeling, Americans do not know if they are consuming GMO foods in a meal. Regardless of public outcry, the labeling of GMO's is not required.

A subset of GMO foods are called Transgenic foods. Some researchers are suggesting that the rise in autism is due to Transgenic foods. The introduction of GMOs into the food chain has now been correlated with an alarming rise in chronic diseases and food allergies.

A growing body of evidence has shown GMOs may cause mysterious allergies, immune reactions, liver problems, sterility, and an alarming rise in severe chronic disease. New diseases of unknown causes are sprouting up all over the world. Why? Read the entire article.
