Severe Heat and Power Outrage Survival Tips

We’re to the part of the summer when the heat seems to be one of the big news stories. Conveniently, everyone seems to forget that it gets hot EVERY summer, so it makes good news.

Along with heat comes power outages, primarily from increased air conditioner use. Several cities are experiencing localized and/or regional brownouts and blackouts this week including Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Detroit, and hundreds of smaller cities and towns.

The media loves this time of year. They can interview hot people, talk about where power is out and when it will come back on, and talk about all the people dying and being hospitalized from the heat.

As our population and electrical infrastructure ages, this is going to be a bigger and bigger issue. Throw in a local or regional disaster, and it’s an issue that almost everyone needs to have a plan for.

I want to start with heat related deaths and say that for the most part, they are a creation of the media. It actually makes me mad when I hear talk about people dying from the heat. It’s not only inaccurate, but it plants the idea in people’s heads that they might die simply because it’s hot out. In the majority of cases where people die from the heat in urban areas, the deaths are completely unnecessary and avoidable. It’s much more accurate to say that these people died from a lack of knowledge, rather than from the heat and a power outage.

Do people die when it gets hot out? Yes, but ask anyone who has deployed to the sandbox, done manual labor throughout the summer, or the millions of people who live in Africa and the Middle East without air conditioning and they’ll tell you that hot weather alone won’t kill you. Read the entire article.

When the Kidneys Start to Fail

by Steven Horne, RH(AHG)

Just under your shoulder blades are the two bean-shaped organs known as the kidneys. All day, and all night, these organs work to filter toxic waste from your blood. To do this, they need water and nutrients, particularly mineral electrolytes like sodium and potassium.

Unfortunately, most people ignore the health of their kidneys. They poison them, clog them and otherwise overwork them until they start to break down. As a result about 11% of the adult population have chronic kidney disease.

There are about 2.4 million nephrons inside your kidneys, whose job it is to filter about 300 pints of water per day, excreting about 2.5 pints in the urine each day. Urine is about 96% water. The more dehydrated a person is, the more toxins have to be concentrated. This makes the urine caustic and irritating, contributing to kidney and bladder infections, cystitis, irritable bladder and other urinary tract problems.

So, the first thing the kidneys need to be healthy is water! It’s easy to tell if you’re drinking enough water. Just look at the color of your urine. Unless you’re taking vitamins or other substances that color it, your urine should be fairly clear. Dark colored urine means you should increase your water intake.

Soda pop, alcohol, caffeinated beverages and energy drinks are all hard on the kidneys. Read the entire article.

Vitamin D Slashes Diabetes Risk

People at high risk of developing diabetes may benefit from consuming Vitamin D. According to WebMD, Tufts Medical Center physician Anastassios Pittas says in a recent study, 'For every 5 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) increase in vitamin D levels, the risk of developing diabetes dropped by 8%.'

The American Diabetes Association reports that an Australian study found that individuals whose blood revealed lower than the recommended vitamin D amounts had a dramatic 57% increase in the development of diabetes mellitus, or type 2 diabetes. Although the study is provocative, the American Diabetes Association is not recommending that persons at high risk for developing diabetes, nor diabetics themselves, start consuming vitamin D supplements without first consulting their physicians. Wilderness Adventure for Vets with PTSD

Since 2008, the Sierra Club's Military Families Outdoors program has offered free trips, through Outward Bound's Veterans Expeditions, to veterans who have served in the Gulf, Somalia, Iraq, or Afghanistan wars. The program makes no therapeutic claims; it just promises "adventure and challenge, solitude and reflection." But any wilderness lover can regale you with stories about the long-term calming effects of an outdoor trek. If a mountain expedition provides mental floss for your average harried urban desk jockey, wouldn't it help someone grappling with the memories of war?

The answer is as untidy as PTSD is complicated. "We know that wilderness heals. We just don't know if it heals PTSD," says Dr. Matthew Friedman, executive director of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and himself a veteran of several Outward Bound treks.

Therapies vying to become VA-approved treatments must meet the gold standard of surviving peer-reviewed randomized clinical trials, and no outdoor-adventure program has been put to that test. (The VA's first-line treatments include psychotherapy and antidepressants.) But, Friedman adds, even if outdoor activities don't specifically ameliorate PTSD, they may reduce the stress that hinders PTSD recovery. VA facilities across the country incorporate exercise and outdoor activity into some of their PTSD treatment programs, prompted by anecdotal evidence from those who know the disorder best—the vets who struggle with it every day.

"When I showed up at the Veterans Center, it was the first time I'd ever spoken to anyone about PTSD," the Army medic says. "My one hope was that they'd tell me I didn't need to be there."

To try to understand PTSD, magnify what you know about everyday stress by 1,000. In the simplest terms, a PTSD sufferer "is someone whose life has been dramatically changed after exposure to a catastrophic event," Friedman says. The experience alters how the patient's brain processes information, how he or she reacts to the environment, and how he or she behaves with loved ones and strangers.

The sufferer becomes intensely preoccupied with the triggering event—whether it's being involved in or being a first responder to a military attack, a childhood trauma, or domestic violence. The symptoms can last years or a lifetime. Some researchers believe symptoms can recur late in life even after seemingly successful treatment. Read the entire article.

Premature Baby Survives with Kangaroo Care Technique

It was a final chance to say goodbye for grieving mother Kate Ogg after doctors gave up hope of saving her premature baby.

She tearfully told her lifeless son - born at 27 weeks weighing 2lb - how much she loved him and cuddled him tightly, not wanting to let him go.

Although little Jamie's twin sister Emily had been delivered successfully, doctors had given Mrs Ogg the news all mothers dread - that after 20 minutes of battling to get her son to breathe, they had declared him dead.

The Australian mother spoke publicly for the first time yesterday to highlight the importance of skin-on-skin care for sick babies, which is being used at an increasing number of British hospitals.

'He started gasping more and more regularly. I thought, "Oh my God, what's going on?" A short time later he opened his eyes. It was a miracle'

In most cases, babies are rushed off to intensive care if there is a serious problem during the birth.

But the 'kangaroo care' technique, named after the way kangaroos hold their young in a pouch next to their bodies, allows the mother to act as a human incubator to keep babies warm, stimulated and fed.

Pre-term and low birth-weight babies treated with the skin-to-skin method have also been shown to have lower infection rates, less severe illness, improved sleep patterns and are at reduced risk of hypothermia. Read more: Read the entire article.

The Mind Matters in Surgery

Surgery, the glory of Western medicine, is ultimately technological. Perfect sterility must preside; every move is calculated, codified and monitored by machines as efficient as they are relentless.

Nevertheless, the achievements of the last 50 years—from microsurgery of the hand to heart transplants and hip replacements—have changed the patient into a passive object of scientific inquiry and the surgeon’s dexterity.

Once patients have agreed to an operation, how can they conceive of themselves as active participants, especially when they experience surgery under general anesthesia?

Although that question seems absurd to the majority of surgeons—and patients—a revolution is underway. Scientific studies are beginning to show what some observers have long suspected: The patient’s attitude and mental preparation play a major role in the way the body responds to that “well-intentioned aggression” we call surgery. Soy - Don't Judge Too Quickly

Soy has been a favorite at our house since the late 70's when we decided to become vegetarians. Over the past couple of years I've received numerous emails about soy not being good. With its long history of health benefits, I figured the beef industry came up with some, shall we say, "fudged" research since soy was a portion of meat sales. So, we continue to enjoy soy in our household as a great source of protein and nutrition. The newest addition to our morning is Smart Meal which comes in Vanilla, Chai, and Chocolate flavors. I've heard the chocolate isn't so great, but we enjoy the Chai and Vanilla.

Here's an article with lots of research references that may ease your mind on soy.

Happy Mom - Weight Loss After Pregnancies

It is about time! People of all walks of life are beginning to understand the phenomenal benefits of rebound exercise.

It’s that exercise one receives when walking, jogging or running on a small mini-trampoline like devise. It has been used by Mr. Universe; Jack LaLane; Ronald Regan, the President of the United States; Bob Hope; Tony Robbins and many other celebrities.

It has been featured on “The Doctors” “The Biggest Looser” and “Good Morning America.”

I make the bold statement, “It is the most efficient, effective form of exercise yet devised by man!” and still it is fun, easy, convenient, economical and safe. Rebounding is ideal for grandma and grandpa when the ReboundAIR is not being used by the children of the family.

Rebounding is unique. It combines the forces of acceleration, deceleration and gravity in a vertical motion about a hundred times a minute thereby strengthening every cell in the body all at once. You read right. Every cell is receiving exercise. That is why it is known as a cellular exercise rather than just a muscular exercise you experience when you visit a health spa.

Food Allergies More Severe Among Children

A new study in the journal Pediatrics reaffirms this growing problem of food allergies among young people.

Researchers found that 8% of children under 18 in the United States have at least one food allergy. In the past, estimates had ranged from 2% to 8%, adding to the growing body of evidence that increasingly more children have food allergies.

Even more striking, among those with food allergies, about 39% had a history of severe reaction and 30% were allergic to multiple foods. The most common food allergen was peanuts, followed by milk and shellfish. Read the entire article.

Do You Need to Do Colon Cleansing?

by Steven Horne, RH(AHG)

There’s a scene in the movie, The Last Emperor, where the Chinese doctors look at the young emperor’s stool and then recommend some changes in his diet. Stool diagnosis is a great way to learn about the health of the digestive tract and the body, in general.

Of course, talking about examining what’s in the toilet isn't very cool. In fact, it's a “dirty” job, but someone’s got to do it, and I guess that someone is going to be me. So, put aside your squeamishness about bowel movements and let’s talk about how you can tell what your body needs from examining the final remains of your recent meals.

FDA Cigarette Warning Labels Get Graphic

The modest one-liners on the dangers of smoking, now featured on cigarette packs, will soon turn into graphic images and messages that cover nearly half the pack. But many experts say the new labels don't go far enough compared to the gruesome images displayed on cigarette labels in more than 40 other countries.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration unveiled the final nine graphics that will appear on cigarette packs, including images of a man smoking from a tracheotomy hole, and rotting teeth wtih short one-line facts such as, 'cigarettes cause cancer.' Read the entire article.

Deaths Exceed Births in 24% of U.S. Communities

Last year, more people died than were born in nearly one-quarter of all U.S. counties, a new study shows.

This trend, known as natural decrease, is the result of younger people moving away, as well as decreases in fertility levels. Researchers from the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) also found that rural areas are particularly hard hit by natural population decrease, which is taking a toll on local schools, hospitals and other family services.

'Last year, 24% of all U.S. counties experienced natural decrease. And, for the first time in U.S. history, deaths now exceed births in an entire state,' Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer with the Carsey Institute and professor of sociology at UNH, said in a university news release.
