Sleep Better with Kava Kava

Uptight? Tense? Upset? Can't Sleep?
Take a Lesson from the Polynesians and
Use Kava Kava to Relax and Sleep Better
by Steven Horne, RH(AHG)

Today, almost everyone is subjected to conditions that cause far too much stress and anxiety. One possible answer for reducing nervousness, insomnia, anxiety, muscle tension and other symptoms of stress is the Polynesian herb, kava kava.

This plant is native to the South Pacific islands where it has been cultivated for over 2,000 years. If you think of the “laid back” energy of the Polynesian people, kava kava may play a role in creating that mellow and relaxed “island” feeling.

Ceremonial Beverage

In the warm moist environment of the South Pacific where kava grows, it has been cultivated for over 2,000 years. The rhizomes of specific varieties of kava have been used by these people both as a medicine and as a cultural exchange of goodwill in ceremonies, festivals and negotiations.

Once reserved as the beverage of chiefs and noblemen, it was and is still used to welcome visiting dignitaries or other important guests at formal gatherings, initiations and in negotiating agreements. Pope John Paul II, Queen Elizabeth, President Lyndon B. Johnson, Lady Bird Johnson, and Hillary Rodham Clinton are all known to have drunk kava upon being welcomed to Fiji and Samoa.

Kava kava has also been used to honor births, marriages, and deaths, in making preparations for a journey, as well as for honoring the gods, removing curses, and as a preparation for battle in tribal wars. Kava bars in Fiji are as common as coffee shops in America. In parts of Polynesia and Indonesia, it is consumed every day as a relaxing, recreational beverage.

Relaxed But Alert

Kava’s botanical name, Piper methysticum, means, “intoxicating pepper.” Kava is a relative of black pepper, but it is not stimulating like pepper, coffee, tea or cola nuts. Instead, it is relaxing, helping a person to feel a sense of calmness, relaxation and even euphoria.

Unlike alcohol, commonly used in the west for similar purposes, kava kava does not dull the senses or cause one to lose control of oneself. People do not become angry, noisy, unpleasant or quarrelsome when drinking kava.

Kava allows the mind to remain sharp, while the body feels relaxed. It promotes restful sleep which replenishes energy, making it a better remedy for fatigue than stimulants like caffeine.

Kava also enhances communication, which is why it is used when treaties or other important issues are being negotiated. Kava does not cause the drinker to lose consciousness and does not result in after affects like the hangover that follows alcohol consumption. Kava also increases empathy and is used to help negotiations and marriage counseling.

Medicinal Uses

Kava has been used in native medicine for its relaxing qualities, for urinary tract infections, asthma and as a topical anesthetic. The primary interest in the West has been its well-documented anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects. Numerous clinical studies and laboratory testing carried out in Germany have shown that kava extracts safely reduce symptoms in patients with anxiety disorders.

Kava contains a blend of several kavalactones that work together to give this herb its remarkable psychoactive effects. Kava affects the central nervous system, influencing the emotional command center of the brain producing both psychological and physical relaxation effects.

Kavalactones have been shown to relieve anxiety and pain. Medicinally kavalactones have muscle relaxant, analgesic, sedative, anti-spasmodic and tranquilizing activities. It is also quite helpful for difficulties in concentrating and memory loss.

Human testing has shown that kavalactones change brain activity without sedation. One study showed that people taking measured doses of kava extract did better in word-recognition tests than those taking a synthetic tranquilizer (benzodiazepine).

A 1993 report in the British Journal of Phytotherapy referred to kava as one of few herbs that can safely relax skeletal muscles, while maintaining clear mental functions. The author of this report prescribed it for nervous tension and conditions associated with skeletal muscle spasms, such as headaches caused by a tense neck.

Another study showed that those taking kava had an improved sense of well-being and marked reduction in nervousness and tension compared to those on a placebo.

Suggested Use

For anxiety, mild depression, pain, muscle tension or tension headaches, take 1 capsule with a meal twice daily. Take 1–2 capsules 30 minutes before bedtime for insomnia. It can be combined with Valerian or Herbal Sleep for insomnia. Do not exceed 4 capsules per day.

Safety Concerns

Considering the many benefits of kava kava and it’s long history of safe use, it is unfortunate that it has had some bad press in recent years. Reports from Europe of kava causing liver damage resulted in the product being pulled from the market in many countries. However, this problem was due to an improper preparation of the plant.

European manufacturers made standardized extracts of kava from the stems (instead of the roots) or from varieties natives do not use. These parts of the plant were not used by natives, who considered them toxic. Given the long history of safe use for kava kava in the South Pacific, you don't have anything to worry about kava extracts sold in the United States because they are made from roots of the correct species.

Still, it is wise to observe the following precautions. Do not use kava kava while driving a motor vehicle or operating machinery, or if you are pregnant or nursing. Avoid kava if you have liver problems, frequently use alcohol or take any medication that can damage the liver. However, the liver is far more likely to be damaged by alcohol, acetaminophen (Tylenol) and prescription drugs (like cholesterol-reducing statins) than it is from kava.

A much longer article on kava kava can be found on our website. We've also posted an article on Herbal Sleep, which can be used with kava kava in helping a person relax and fall asleep more quickly.

New Science on Alzheimer’s Cause

New research appears to upend our current scientific understanding of the causes of Alzheimer’s disease, and may lead to a whole new approach to finding a cure for the devastating dementia.

The new theory gaining traction in the scientific community is that in Alzheimer’s the brain is destroyed not by sticky plaques—long held to be the culprit—but by floating clumps of protein. In fact, the sticky plaques that coat the brain cells of those with Alzheimer’s may be the body’s way of protecting against these deadly clumps—the way an oyster forms a pearl to protect against an irritating grain of sand, according to one researcher.

For the last 20 years, following the prevailing theory that sticky plaques cause Alzheimer’s disease, drug developers have been targeting that plaque in their search for a cure. Read the entire article.

Liver Health

The liver is the second largest organ in the human body. It performs a large number of functions that are essential to the health of all body systems.1 The liver aids in metabolism and digestion, and is a major detoxifying organ, breaking down and neutralizing harmful toxic substances.1,2 The liver plays a role in the production of blood-clotting substances and produces much of the body’s cholesterol, which is required for the synthesis of hormones and the maintenance of healthy cell membranes.1

The liver also aids in controlling blood sugar levels by releasing stored glucose when blood sugar levels fall too low.1 This vital organ is susceptible to many diseases and conditions that can impair liver function, some of which include cirrhosis, hepatitis, and cancer. Some causes of liver damage and disease include alcohol, environmental pollutants, medications, and viral infections.

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) herb is well-known for its liver-supporting effects. Milk thistle seed contains a phytochemical known as silymarin, which, when ingested, concentrates in liver cells. Silymarin acts as a potent antioxidant and has been found to stimulate the regeneration of liver cells.3 Silymarin increases glutathione production in the liver.

Glutathione is the major endogenous antioxidant produced in the body for Liverprotection against free radical damage3 and is used for detoxification in liver cells.4 Milk thistle also contains compounds that inhibit the entrance and binding of toxins in the liver.4 In clinical studies, milk thistle has been shown to have liver-protective effects in cases of cirrhosis associated with viruses and chronic alcohol use.4

Other herbs that have traditionally been used to support liver health and cleansing include dandelion root, parsley, yellow dock root, blessed thistle, golden rod, and angelica root.

N-acetyl cysteine is a precursor to glutathione.3 Glutathione itself cannot cross cell membranes, but N-acetyl cysteine easily crosses cell membranes where it is converted to glutathione.3 N-acetyl cysteine protects the liver from toxicity by restoring glutathione levels in the liver.3,5 One of the major functions of glutathione is the maintenance of normal detoxification activity in the liver, which is vital to healthy liver function5

Choline is an essential nutrient that is produced in the liver.3 Increasing choline intake has been found to improve liver function.3,5 In the body, choline is used to produce phosphatidylcholine, which is required for the transport of fats from the liver to the blood and tissues. Without adequate levels of this nutrient, fat and cholesterol will accumulate in the liver.6 Inositol is another nutrient that aids in the removal of fats from the liver.3

SAMe is a natural substance that is found in most body tissues and fluids.3,5 It plays a crucial role as a methyl donor in the process of transmethylation,5 which is required for the synthesis of proteins, phospholipids, RNA, DNA and other bio-molecules.5 There is evidence that SAMe supports liver health.3 Levels of SAM-e are depleted in a diseased liver.5 SAMe’s methylating properties promote the fluidity of liver cell membranes, and supplementing with SAMe may also increase glutathione levels in the liver.3,5 Studies indicate that supplementing with SAMe improves liver-function tests and prevents or reverses liver toxicity induced by drugs, alcohol and various chemicals.5

Vitamin D Levels Increased for Children

Vitamin D has long been known to support bone health. But new studies reveal that this vitamin plays many important roles beyond bone health. Recent scientific evidence suggests that vitamin D plays a vital role in maintaining innate immunity, protecting cardiovascular health, and protecting cells, among numerous other health benefits. Emerging data shows that vitamin D deficiency may contribute to the development of various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, some inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, and certain cancers.

Dietary sources of vitamin D are generally limited to fortified foods and a few animal sources such as fish and eggs. Vitamin D is naturally produced in the body through exposure to direct sunlight; however, not everyone will manufacture the needed amounts with sun exposure. For example, people with darker skin tone, the elderly, and those living in northern latitudes may not produce an adequate supply of the sunshine vitamin.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recently doubled its recommendation for the minimum amount of vitamin D that children should get daily. The new guidelines recommend at least 400 international units (IU) daily. That’s roughly equivalent to the amount of vitamin D found in four 8-ounce glasses of milk. But most children don’t drink enough milk to receive adequate levels of vitamin D. The AAP states that the best way to ensure that children receive adequate vitamin D is through supplementation.

Two recent studies have highlighted the need for vitamin D supplementation in children. A study published in the journal Pediatrics concluded that even children who live in sunny climates aren’t getting enough vitamin D. Researchers found that a low vitamin D status is prevalent among adolescents living in year-round sunny climates in the southeastern United States. The researchers also compared vitamin D status in African American and Caucasian adolescents and found that African American youths were particularly low in vitamin D. They also found that low levels of vitamin D in kids were linked to increased fat, decreased physical activity, and lower fitness levels.

Another recent study found that seven out of 10 U.S. children have low levels of vitamin D, raising their risk of bone and cardiovascular concerns. The researchers found that nine percent of the study sample, equivalent to 7.6 million children across the U.S., was vitamin D deficient, while another 61 percent, or 50.8 million, was vitamin D insufficient. "We expected the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency would be high, but the magnitude of the problem nationwide was shocking," reported the study’s lead author.

The study showed that low vitamin D levels were especially common in children who were older, female, African-American, Mexican-American, obese, drank milk less than once a week, or spent more than four hours a day watching TV, playing video games, or using computers. The researchers also found that vitamin D deficiency was associated with higher parathyroid hormone levels, a marker of bone health, higher systolic blood pressure, and lower serum calcium and HDL (good) cholesterol levels, which are key risk factors for heart disease.4,5

In the study, children who took vitamin D supplements (at least 400 IU per day) were less likely to be deficient in the vitamin. However, only four percent of the children studied actually used supplements.4

Better Vision with Antioxidants

by Steven Horne, RH(AHG)

Millions of Americans have sung the question, "Oh say, can you see?" Unfortunately, for many millions of senior citizens, the answer to that question is, "No." That's because diseases like cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration rob thousands of people of their vision every year.

The sad thing is that one simple nutritional change could save many people's vision. That change is to get more antioxidant nutrients into the diet. Antioxidants are extremely critical to eye health because the eyes are extremely prone to oxidative stress and free radical damage. In fact, oxidative stress is the underlying cause of cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

In Chinese medicine, a connection was seen between the eyes and the liver. That is to say that TCM practitioners observed that the health of the eyes was connected to the health of the liver. One aspect of this connections is that both the eyes and the liver require high levels of antioxidant nutrients to function properly. So, if antioxidant levels are low, both tissues will be adversely affected.

There are two reasons the eyes need a good supply of antioxidants to stay healthy. The first is simple, sunlight can cause free radical damage. That's why excessive sunbathing can damage the skin. So, because the eyes are designed to take in light and be sensitive to it, they are especially prone to being damaged. Antioxidant nutrients protect the eyes from this damage.

The second reason the eyes need a lot of antioxidants is because they are very active, constantly sending millions of bits of information to the brain. This requires a high metabolism (the process the body uses to create energy) and metabolism also creates free radicals. So, organs with higher metabolic rates, like the eyes and the liver, also need more antioxidants.

Let Your Eyes Guide You to Better Nutrition

So, you might ask, "How do I make this simple change and get more antioxidants into your diet?" The answer is to let your eyes guide you. You see, the bright colors of various fruits and vegetables signal the presence of various antioxidants. So, as you shop for food, you should look for bright colored fruits and vegetables and eat them every day. In other words, you should eat a rainbow of foods whose colors please your eyes as much as their flavors please your taste buds.

For example, lutein and xeaxanthin, are yellowish pigments found in foods like spinach, kale, green beans, corn and egg yolks. They are also antioxidants that protect your eyes from the blue and near-ultraviolet wavelengths of light. Protecting the eyes from these wavelengths of light reduces the risk of macular degeneration.

Carrots are high in beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A. Both vitamin A and beta-carotene are very critical antioxidants for the eyes, meaning there is some truth to the popular belief that carrots are good for your eyes.

There are other carotenoids that protect the eyes, too. For instance, lycopene, a carotenoid that contributes to the red color of tomatoes, helps protect eyes from light and oxygen damage. It also protects the prostate and blood vessels.

The dark purple color of blue berries, huckleberries and bilberries is due to the presence of anthocyanodins. These compounds protect blood vessels in the eyes (and throughout the body) and enhance night vision.

The bottom line is that our eyes can help to guide our nutritional choices, so we obtain the nutrients our eyes need to stay healthy. An ingenious system, don't you think?

Antioxidant Supplements

Antioxidant supplements are the "big thing" right now, but it's important to remember that foods contain extremely complex mixtures of nutrients that isolated supplements will never be able to duplicate. So, it's very important that you "eat" your antioxidants in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables, and not rely strictly on supplements. Besides, colorful food is a lot more fun to ingest than pills.

Still, there are antioxidant supplements that provide an added boost to protecting the eyes. For general antioxidant protection, which will benefit the whole body, not just the eyes, consider supplements like Thai-Go and Super ORAC.

Milk Thistle Combination is a great antioxidant for the liver, which means it will also help the eyes. It contains N-acetyl cysteine, a compound that increases levels of an intracellular antioxidant called glutathione. People with catarcts tend to be deficient in glutathione.

Since carotenoids are so important for the eyes, Carotenoid Blend is another antioxidant that can help to keep you seeing the world clearly. It contains beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lutein, lycopene, zeaxanthin, cryptoxanthin, phytoene, phytofluence and astaxanthin.

For more specific protection for the eyes consider Perfect Eyes, which contains the carotenoids lutein, xeaxanthin, beta-carotene and lycopene. In addition, it contains the herbs bilberry and turmeric, which have powerful anti-inflammatory properties that protect the eyes, liver, blood vessels and other tissues from damage. Perfect Eyes also contains n-acetyl cysteine, taurine, selenium, zinc, quercitin and hespiridin.

If you'd like to learn more about how the ingredients in Perfect Eyes can help ensure that you'll be able to answer yes to the question "Oh, say can you see" for many years to come, check out our new on-line database on our Tree of Light Publishing website. Visit the new database of articles at Treelite.com.
