Women Turn To Natural Menopause Remedies

When a woman starts going through menopause, her entire life can change without warning. Menopause symptoms can cause undesirable reactions in the body that runs the gamut from hot flashes and weight gain to mood swings, sleeplessness and irritability. These menopause signs cause women to feel different as well as look different, since skin's elasticity and overall vitality decrease dramatically with the onset of these menopause symptoms.

In lieu of taking hormone replacement therapies to treat menopause signs, more and more women are turning to natural menopause remedies for a safer solution that is just as effective. Read the entire article.

Computers and Vision: More Nearsighted

A new study conducted by the National Eye Institute shows that the rate of nearsightedness, or myopia, in Americans has increased from 25 percent in the 1970s to a staggering 41 percent this year.

The study didn't examine the causes of such an increase, but experts told 'Good Morning America' the reasons could include genetics or poor outdoor lighting. Another possible reason could be an increase in 'near work'-like reading, surfing the Web or texting. View video for full story.

Antidepressants Change Personality

People who take antidepressants such as Paxil often say they feel less stressed and more outgoing, lively, and confident. Now a new study suggests it's not just because they're less depressed.

In fact, such drugs may alter two key personality traits linked to depression -- neuroticism and extraversion -- independently of their effect on depression symptoms.

'Medication can definitely change people's personalities, and change them quite substantially,' says the lead author of the study, Tony Z. Tang, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The findings show that 'those changes are very important,' he says.

In the study, people who took Paxil (paroxetine), a selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), had a drop in neuroticism, which is a tendency toward emotional instability and negative mood. They also had an increase in extraversion, which is a tendency toward outgoingness, compared to similarly depressed people taking placebo. Read the entire article.

Skin and Nails

Hair, skin and nails provide a look at the inner health of the body. These outward 'signs' can tell you a lot about the condition of your inward health.

Often we may have problems with our skin such as dull skin, skin likely to break out in blotches or skin that dehydrates easily. All of these problems and many more indicate the lack of proper nutrition.

Nails are an extension of both the hair and skin. They've long been an indicator of health-related problems. Sometimes they don't grow fast enough, they may split or contain ridges or even white spots. Healthy nails should be pink, smooth and shiny. Changes in their color, shape and texture may signal the presence of disease. Disorders affecting the blood, such as thyroid conditions, poor circulation and heart, liver and kidney disease, can contribute to a change in nail condition. Read the entire article.

Bidding For Medical Services

By: Sid Kirchheimer | Source: From the AARP Bulletin

They say you can’t put a price on good health. But at PriceDoc, you can bid on the cost of hundreds of procedures, inoculations and tests, including many not covered by health insurance.

The free online service has expanded to cash- and credit card-paying patients in 30 major cities and will include some 3,000 medical, dental, vision and other practitioners.

How it works: Select your procedure from any of seven tabs, enter your ZIP code or city, and choose from local providers, clinics and practices. You can “reserve” a price from published fees, make a lower offer or “name your price.” Then, print your voucher and call the “winner” for an appointment. Providers decide whether they will accept insurance for procedures. Check out PriceDoc.com.

Tylenol Recall Expands Into More Products

McNeill initiated a voluntary recall of Tylenol Arthritis Relief Caplets at the end of December after consumer complaints of stomach problems. The problems were linked to the presence of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA), which results from the breakdown of a chemical in wood pallets used to transport and store packaging materials for the drugs.

Now it appears that the problem extended into other Tylenol products as well, according to the FDA. The broadened directive adds 54 million bottles of product to the recall, boosting the total number of bottles recalled by McNeil to 60 million, according to the company.

Tylenol Extra Strength, Rolaids and a number of children's medicines are now included in the recall, which affects 27 products in various packaging quantities. Read the entire article.

Glandular Support for Weight Management

The thyroid is a gland located in the front part of the neck, below the Adam’s apple. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate metabolism and are important in regulating energy, body temperature, basal metabolic rate, the use of other hormones, as well as helping to regulate growth and development. The thyroid gland and the other endocrine organs may play a role in how the body responds to changes in diet and exercise.

With increasing age, metabolism naturally slows down. This occurs primarily because of normal muscle mass atrophy and a natural decrease in levels of hormones such as T3 and testosterone. An increase in the production of a hormone called cortisol, in response to stress, may also impact weight-management efforts.

T3, or triiodothyronine, is an iodine-containing hormone produced by the thyroid gland. It is synthesized under the influence of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) by attaching iodine atoms to the amino acid tyrosine. A lack of proper nutrition can have a negative effect on the thyroid and on metabolic rate. Nutritional ingredients that support optimal thyroid function include Irish moss, kelp, black walnut, l-tyrosine, zinc and 7-keto. (See Thyroid Activator and Thyroid Support.)

Healthy thyroid status is dependent on the presence of multiple elements necessary for the synthesis and metabolism of thyroid hormones. Irish moss, kelp and black walnut are good sources of iodine. Iodine plays a central role in thyroid function, being both a major constituent of thyroid hormones and a regulator of thyroid gland function. Zinc intake is also important as suboptimal dietary intakes of zinc can adversely affect thyroid hormone function.1 7-keto, a metabolite of DHEA, may increase the production of T3, supporting metabolism and weight loss.2

Cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, plays multiple roles throughout the body. In addition to its best-known role as the “stress hormone,” it is involved in glucose metabolism, regulation of blood pressure and in immune function. Cortisol levels naturally fluctuate and are highest in the morning and lowest at night. Bursts of cortisol are also released in response to physical or psychological stress.

While small amounts of cortisol have positive effects, research has shown that prolonged elevated cortisol levels are connected with increased amounts of abdominal fat and also cause increased consumption of calories.3 Nutritional ingredients commonly suggested to counteract the physiological effects of stress associated with elevated cortisol levels include magnolia bark extract, phellodendron extract, holy basil, l-theanine and DHEA. (See Nature's Cortisol.)

The combination of magnolia bark extract and phellodendron extract has been shown to help curb stress-related eating and mild anxiety.4,5 This was associated with reduced weight gain and some weight loss among study volunteers. Compounds naturally occurring in holy basil, an Indian herb, have positive effects on stress parameters and may help to decrease the effects of stress by normalizing the levels of stress-related hormones.6 L-theanine, a non-essential amino acid found in green tea, promotes the generation of alpha brain waves indicative of relaxation without causing a drowsy state or impairment of motor skills.7 DHEA is a hormone precursor produced by the adrenal glands.

After about age 25, the body’s production of DHEA declines, leading many experts to believe that DHEA plays a role in the aging process. Research shows that administration of DHEA decreases plasma cortisol concentration and may decrease weight, abdominal fat and insulin levels.8,9

Additional nutritional ingredients with a history of successful use in supporting the glandular system include licorice, parsley, schizandra, vitamin B5, vitamin C and manganese.

15 Ways to Get Rid of Acne

Inside your hair follicles, there are small glands producing oil called sebum. This oil mixes with skin cells in the follicle and joins them on the journey outward. But when there's too much sebum, too many dead skin cells or something on the surface that blocks their exit from the follicle, a blockage can occur. Bacteria joins the party, and the result is acne vulgaris, the most common form of acne.

While acne usually affects teenagers and 20somethings the most, anyone of any age can get acne, even babies. Our instinctual response -- picking at it, rubbing it and canceling our social engagements -- doesn't help in the least, but fortunately, there are some treatments available that can. So what can we do to get rid of acne? .

Tea Tree Oil For Scalp Problems

When it comes to common scalp problems like hair loss, dry skin, dandruff and head lice, tea tree oil may be an effective natural alternative to harsh chemicals. In shampoo form, it may be effective in reducing dandruff, unclogging hair follicles and clearing up bacterial and fungal infections. However, even though Australia's Aboriginal people have used tea tree oil for centuries, studies that have tested its effectiveness for treating dandruff and other scalp conditions are inconclusive. Junk Food Free Party for Kids

Many party hosts feel they are giving kids the ultimate treat by spreading a table laden with every imaginable kind of junk food. A typical party table is graced with a white flour, frosted cake in the center decorated with a sugary, colorant laden picture of Superman or Barbie. There is likely to be an array of cupcakes made with the same awful ingredients, bowls of various types of colored candies, potato crisps, lollipops, ice cream and so on.

Surprised parents and friends then wonder why, after gorging on this rubbish for a couple of hours, the party disintegrates into a frightening display of kids who are fighting, screaming and hyperactive. To avoid this scenario, try healthy snacks next time around.

Any parent who has hosted a party for kids knows that food actually plays a small role in the success of the event. Kids are far more interested in swimming or playing games. Having a theme and organizing a few games with prizes will make kids even happier.

Drinks and snacks are something the kids will come past for every now and then, so keep their blood sugar levels stable and introduce foods that are colorful but healthy. If they are amazed or disgusted at a display of healthy food, don't be discouraged. If they are hungry, they will eat. Get the how-to.

Take Charge of Your Health

Patients with diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis are embracing a self-management plan that dramatically improves their lives. So why won't insurers pay for it?

Chronic diseases are now the leading cause of disability and death in the United States, with seven in ten deaths each year attributed to such illnesses as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. About 133 million Americans—nearly one in two adults—live with at least one chronic disease, and more than one in ten have three or more.

In 1991 Kate Lorig and a team of Stanford researchers set out to develop a results-oriented self-management program that would improve the quality of life for people with chronic conditions.

The team started by organizing focus groups for more than 100 people with ongoing illnesses in northern California. Each participant was asked a simple question: "What are your disease-related problems?"

Although their illnesses varied, they shared some common symptoms (fatigue, fear, depression) and had similar lifestyle issues (poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking) that were interfering with their health. Read the entire article.

Baking Soda for Cancers

Bicarbonate of soda or baking soda to cure cancer? .... there are those inexpensive non-toxic remedies that slip by the Medical Monopoly virtually unnoticed. Some become like folk medicines that can be administered individually. This type of application worked for Vernon Johnston. He used baking soda and molasses as the driving force to recover from aggressive stage 4 prostate cancer, which had even metastasized into his bone matter!

After Vernon was diagnosed, Vernon`s brother Larry told him to work on raising his pH because cancer cannot thrive in a high or alkaline pH. Larry recommended cesium chloride to raise Vernon`s pH levels into a high alkaline level physiologically. Cesium chloride is another one of those alternative cancer remedies that are not well known.

Cesium treatment protocols used by doctors in conjunction with ozone or DMSO had a 50% cure rate. But this unimpressive cure rate, albeit better than orthodox treatments, included patients who had received some or all of the surgery, radiation and toxic chemotherapy that the AMA could offer.

Often these patients were drastically weakened with many of their non-cancerous cells destroyed and some organs damaged. Sometimes they were sent home to die. It`s estimated that at least 90% of cancer patients go through orthodox treatments before attempting to use natural alternative cures.

Vernon did not undergo any harmful orthodox treatments after he was diagnosed. He optimistically ordered the cesium chloride. But it got lost in the mail, or so it seemed. So he frantically looked for another source of raising his pH level into the alkaline range.

That`s when he discovered the remedy of baking soda or bicarbonate of soda with maple syrup. Not having maple syrup in his kitchen, he decided to use the molasses that was handy. He was anxious to kill the cancer before it killed him. Read the entire article.

Immune Defense Boosters

It's important to keep the immune system in optimal shape. The immune system is a versatile and complex network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to counteract the effects of foreign invaders. However, immune function may decline with age, inadequate nutrition and stress. During the cold and flu season natural alternatives for immune system support help target unwanted invaders.

Olive leaf extract is used to enhance the immune system, and has antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. The active component in olive leaf extract is called oleuropein. Present throughout the olive tree (wood, fruit, leaves, roots and bark), this compound protects the tree form insect and bacterial predators and imparts numerous benefits when taken in supplement form.1,2

For over 2,500 years Black Elderberry has treated influenza, coughs, and colds.3 Elderberry juice is said to “activate the body’s powers of resistance”,4 enabling the body to keep and restore good health. Elderberry extract is supported by scientific studies in its effects against influenza through a heightened immune system response.5

Goldenseal is a Native American medicinal plant introduced to early settlers by Cherokee Indians who used it as a wash for skin diseases, wounds, and for sore, inflamed eyes. Goldenseal has acquired a considerable reputation as a natural antibiotic and as a remedy for various gastric and genitourinary concerns. The alkaloids hydrastine, berberine, canadine, and canadaline are the principle active constituents in goldenseal. The berberine constituent is most noted for its antimicrobial effects.6

Tea Tree Oil extracted from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree native to Australia has been used by Australian aborigines for several centuries. Topically, tea tree oil is commonly used for skin and skin surface infections such as acne, athlete's foot, and ringworm.

Pau d’Arco has been used since the time of the Incas as a healing plant. The component of pau d’arco that seems to have the most significance is a naphthoquinone derivative known as lapachol, shown in studies to have activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.7

Garlic is rich in a variety of sulfur-containing compounds including allicin and ajoene. While these compounds are responsible for garlic's pungent odor, they are also the source of many of its health-promoting effects. In addition to antifungal benefits, garlic is also reported to have antibacterial, anthelmintic, and antiviral effects.8

A combination of herbs described by Chinese herbalists as having “metal-enhancing” properties includes indigo, bupleurum, scute, and Thlaspi arvense. These herbs create a favorable environment for microbial balance and overall health, support detoxification and promote a healthy respiratory tract (see VS-C).

Headache Types and Causes

Types of Headaches

* Migraines - Migraines may be humanity's oldest malady. The name comes from the Greek physician Galen when he used it to describe this disorder in 200 A.D. Six-thousand year old Sumerian writings refer to a crude form of holes chiseled in skulls to allow escape of pain creating "demons." Considered to be a vascular headache. The pain is located most often in the temporal or frontal regions of the head. Symptoms can include aching in and around the eye and may be accompanied by a loss of appetite, sensitivity to light, nausea and/or vomiting. Also, they can be preceded by 15 to 90 minutes of an "aura," which may include visual disturbances, distorted perception, hallucinations, flashes of light, and temporary loss of sight or hearing. Journal of American Medical Association reports (in 1996) that 8.7 million females and 2.6 million males suffer from moderate to severe headaches.

* Cluster - Pain of this kind of headache is usually intense. Often they begin in the evening, but most often awaken individuals after they have been asleep for a several hours. Most often affect males and are often worse in the spring and fall seasons. The pain is severe and normally lasts 30-90 minutes, sometimes it may persist for several hours. The name is given because the headaches occur in groups of headaches that may last for a day or two to several months, then they many not occur for months or even years.

* Tension - Usually accompanied by stress and/or anxiety. They rarely occur upon arising from bed but instead occur as the day progresses and a person's stress accumulates. Neck stiffness and tension are often present. Many times the pain will seem to start at the base of the neck and begin to advance up the neck as the pain intensifies. They normally begin in a gradual manner and can persist from several hours to days or weeks. Tei Fu Massage Lotion helps to relax the neck whenever it begins to tense up.
