Stomach Comfort Neutralizes Stomach Acid

An independent lab tested Nature's Sunshine Stomach Comfort against three random samples of popular, over-the-counter antacid products to see how much acid each would neutralize. Here's the story:

Since high levels of stomach acid can lead to many forms of discomfort (heartburn, indigestion, etc.), the product that neutralizes the most acid in a given time period should provide superior relief.

Using pre-established scientific testing methods, we placed a sample equivalent to one tablet of each product into separate beakers containing 70 ml of water plus 30 ml of hydrochloric acid (the same acid found in the stomach) and stirred for 15 minutes. Then we measured the amount of acid remaining in each beaker. Deducting this from the original 30 ml of acid, we calculated how much acid was neutral ized in each beaker.

As you can see, Nature's Sunshine Stomach Comfort neutralized more acid than the three competitors, providing 12.5 - 50% more relief per tablet.  Read more about this product and buy here.

Sit More, Die Sooner

Sit at leisure, die at haste, an American Cancer Society study finds.

In the 14-year study, people who spent at least 6 hours of their daily leisure time sitting died sooner than people who sat less than 3 hours.

And people who both sit a lot and exercise little are at even higher risk of death, find ACS epidemiologist Alpa V. Patel, PhD, and colleagues. Patel's data come from 53,440 U.S. men and 69,776 women who were 50-74 years old when the study began in 1992.

After adjusting for smoking, height/weight, and other factors, Patel's team found that compared to sitting less than three hours a day, sitting six or more hours a day:

Increased the death rate by about 40% in women
Increased the death rate by about 20% in men
Increased the death rate by 94% in the least active women
Increased the death rate by 48% in the least active men

It wasn't just that they weren't getting exercise. Patel and colleagues found that sitting itself was detrimental to health. Read the entire article.

Fish Oil Against Breast Cancer

A recent report in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, adds to the growing evidence that fish oil supplements may play a role in preventing chronic disease.

Regular use of fish oil supplements, which contain high levels of the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, was linked with a 32 percent reduced risk of breast cancer. The reduction in risk appeared to be restricted to invasive ductal breast cancer, the most common type of the disease.

This research is the first to demonstrate a link between the use of fish oil supplements and a reduction in breast cancer. Studies of dietary intake of fish or omega-3 fatty acids have not been consistent.

"It may be that the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil supplements are higher than most people would typically get from their diet," White said. Read the entire article. Get quality a quality fish oil supplement with lemon oil to prevent burping: Nature's Sunshine Omega 3 EPA.

Boost Your Adrenal Glands For Stress

If the pace of life has left you exhausted, your adrenal glands may need some support. These triangular-shaped glands that sit on top of the kidneys handle all of our work, home, financial, relationship, family stresses, and much more. Yet most of us don’t give them a second thought until we’re exhausted, depressed, or experiencing other symptoms of adrenal stress.

Here are 14 ways to give your adrenals a boost:

1. Give the fast food a break. Usually loaded with neurotoxins like monosodium glutamate (MSG), fast food can cause your body to be in a constant state of stress after eating it and until the chemicals are detoxified from your system. Depending on the strength of your liver’s detoxification systems that can be anywhere from a few hours to several days.

2. Take a deep breath…and then, take a few more. Research shows that even a few minutes of deep breathing can have an impact on the adrenal glands by reducing the stress hormones they secrete. Instead of jumping out of your seat during a traffic jam or other stressful spot, start breathing deeply."

Infectious Diseases and Species Extinction Link

Scientists are discovering that species extinctions fuel the rise and spread of infectious diseases and hinder medical research.

The Rutgers study is just one of many new investigations into the link between biodiversity and human health. “The natural world provides so many services vital to our health,” says Eric Chivian, founder and director of Harvard Medical School’s Center for Health and the Global Environment. “But these services depend on an enormous diversity of species about whose interactions we know very little.”

Over the past decade, the Harvard center has been working with three United Nations agencies to draw together what scientists do know. In 2008, it published Sustaining Life: How Human Health Depends on Biodiversity. The 542-page tome draws on the research and expertise of more than 100 scientists. But rather than a dry academic text, it takes the form of a richly illustrated coffee table book with chapter authors writing in language accessible to a general audience as well as their fellow scientists. “Above all,” Chivian explains, “we’re trying to reach beyond specialists to help everyone grasp the urgencies involved in species loss.”

Diversity and Disease
Imagine a newly hatched tick resting on the floor of a northeastern U.S. forest, waiting for its first blood meal. If the larval tick is in a fragmented or otherwise degraded patch of woods, the first host it encounters will probably be a white-footed mouse.

As a result, the tick will likely become infected with the Lyme disease microbe, Borrelia burgdorferi. In much of the United States, up to 80 percent of white-footed mice carry this disease-causing bacterium, which they pass to deer and humans via the bite of infected ticks.

Now consider the same newly hatched tick in an undisturbed forest. Here its first host is more likely to be an opossum, raccoon, ground bird, lizard or other non-mouse host. None are good carriers of the Lyme disease bacterium. As a result, the tick will likely escape infection and never transmit the disease to anyone.

In 2000, animal ecologist Richard Ostfeld described this Lyme disease-blocking dynamic and dubbed it the “dilution effect.” In essence, he explains, the greater a habitat’s biodiversity, the more likely that an animal-borne microbe such as B. burgdorferi will end up in a dead-end host—one that does not pass it along. Probiotics and Hayfever

If you are one of the more than 35.9 million hay fever (allergic rhinitis) sufferers in the United States, you know that the runny nose, sneezing, congestion and sinus pressure do not end with winter (1). These symptoms may be just beginning in the spring and summer months. Fortunately, a variety of natural products help deal with allergic reactions to a variety of airborne substances. In addition to the great seasonal allergy remedies available, a new pilot study might have you reaching for one of your favorite winter products; probiotics.

During a hay fever attack, the immune system reacts upon exposure to certain airborne substances that it thinks are harmful. Pollens, fungal spores, dust mites and dander are all common culprits. In the body's initial exposure to these substances, the immune system produces specific antibodies to fight them. In subsequent exposures, these antibodies will recognize the substances and signal immune cells to release histamine and other chemicals that help deal with the symptoms associated with hay fever.

For the first time ever, scientists from the Institute of Food Research reported that a specific strain of probiotic may help reduce hay fever symptoms in humans (2). In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 10 hay fever sufferers were given a milk drink with added Lactobacillus casei (L. casei); while 10 others were given a milk drink without the added probiotic as a placebo for a five-month period. The researchers collected blood samples before, at the peak, and at the end of grass pollen season to determine levels of the plasma antibodies and cytokines specific to grass pollens.

Levels of both were significantly decreased for the group that took the probiotic milk drink compared to those who did not. These results suggest that supplementation of L. casei and possibly other probiotic strains may reduce the symptoms of hay fever. Read the entire article.

Food Allergies on the Rise in Children

Two-year-old Ethan Wily had a cold recently, so at first it wasn't surprising that he started coughing last week after eating some pistachio gelato. But he started coughing up mucus, and then gasping for air. His parents gave him an antihistamine, but it didn't stop the reaction. By the time the boy's parents brought him to their local hospital, he could barely breathe.

It seems like more and more children in the U.S. are developing food allergies, and there's data to back that up. The number of kids with food allergies went up 18 percent from 1997 to 2007, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 3 million children younger than 18 had a food or digestive allergy in 2007, the CDC said.

Scientists are still trying to figure out why food allergies seem to be on the rise, especially in industrialized countries such as the United States. Are children not getting exposed to enough bacteria? Should they eat common allergens such as nuts and shellfish at an earlier age?

Early Warning for Allergy Sufferers

Nine states risk facing large increases in allergenic tree pollen if global warming increases unabated, says an NWF study of the eastern United States, Extreme Allergies and Global Warming. Seven more states may suffer moderate increases.

Tree pollen is the most common trigger for spring hay fever allergies. “Climate change could allow highly allergenic trees like oaks and hickories to start replacing pines, spruces and firs that generally don’t cause allergies, exposing many more people to springtime allergy triggers,” says Amanda Staudt, NWF climate scientist and lead author of the report. States at risk of high increases in tree pollen are Arkansas, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and West Virginia.

Fall allergies, caused primarily by ragweed, also are worsening.

A natural compound, xylitol looks and tastes like sugar. It is found naturally in many common fruits and vegetables, and it is even produced by our bodies during metabolism. Xylitol is as sweet as sugar, yet it carries none of the health concerns of artificial sweeteners, making it completely safe for both children and adults. And it may actually help improve the health of your teeth!

Xylitol has also been shown to improve dental health. Decades of scientific research and over 1,500 papers have confirmed it. Lactic acid, the most damaging acid for your teeth, is formed by the fermentation of sugar by bacteria. Bacteria cannot ferment xylitol, which results in less tooth-destroying acid and promotes an inhospitable environment for unwanted microorganisms.

Unlike most sugar molecules, which have a six-carbon “hexose” unit, xylitol is a five-carbon “pentitol” sugar. Thanks to its distinctive structure, bacteria cannot utilize xylitol for energy. Its chemical configuration also inhibits the body’s ability to fully metabolize it, making it the perfect sweetener for those concerned with blood sugar balance.
