My Thyroid is Not Working

by Dr. Hugo Rodier, M.D.

I hear this from a lot from a significant number of patients who feel practically all their symptoms (fatigue, hair falling out being the most common) are due to their thyroid, despite normal serum levels. They frequently add that they have been told or they read on the internet that it is common to have thyroid dysfunction that does not show up in the testing.

Chances are you have also contemplated this dilemma. Assuming you are reading this because you respect my opinion, I will pull no punches in telling you what I believe is going on. Read the entire article.

  1. I was diagnosed with TSH @ 6.00 six months ago; offered Synthroid. I decided an herbal route: Bladderwrack. I "think" it was helping--but not significantly and stopped using it. The fatigue, fogginess in thinking, cold intolerance, etc. all were a continual part of my thyroid problems. Had another thyroid panel run two days ago: All in the "normal" range. No offer for a thyroid supplement. So...now am trying the Bladderwrack route again. Concerned about the high mercury content. Does Bladderwrack work well enough over a period of time or am I just wasting my time and messing w/medical results enough to make my life even more miserable w/no medication offerd from my physican. I feel awful all over--physically, mentally and spiritually. Duh. Thanks for any help you might offer me.

  2. Since I'm not a medical doctor, I cannot prescribe what you should do. I do know that bladderwrack is known to nourish the thyroid. I would think that the blood work would tell you what is working. For me, if I tried a natural approach and got good results on the blood work, I'd keep doing what I'm doing.

As to the mercury in bladderwrack .. finding a pure source requires finding a company that tests its raw materials and guarantees purity.

Nature's Sunshine does that, but they do not sell this herb as an individual herb. The only formula they have with it in there is Cellu-Smooth which is not targeted towards thyroid.
