Roundup Herbicide Deadly to Human Cells

Used in gardens, farms, and parks around the world, the weed killer Roundup contains an ingredient that can suffocate human cells in a laboratory, researchers say

Used in yards, farms and parks throughout the world, Roundup has long been a top-selling weed killer. But now researchers have found that one of Roundup’s inert ingredients can kill human cells, particularly embryonic, placental and umbilical cord cells.

The new findings intensify a debate about so-called “inerts” — the solvents, preservatives, surfactants and other substances that manufacturers add to pesticides. Nearly 4,000 inert ingredients are approved for use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Glyphosate, Roundup’s active ingredient, is the most widely used herbicide in the United States. About 100 million pounds are applied to U.S. farms and lawns every year, according to the EPA.

Until now, most health studies have focused on the safety of glyphosate, rather than the mixture of ingredients found in Roundup. But in the new study, scientists found that Roundup’s inert ingredients amplified the toxic effect on human cells—even at concentrations much more diluted than those used on farms and lawns. Boost Your Immune System

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, astragalus often is made into a tea, and slices of the root are simmered in soup.

The coming cold and flu season is only one of the hundreds of reasons that immune function should always be at the top of your list of health priorities.

The immune system doesn’t just keep sniffles away—it also is the body’s best defense against potentially deadly diseases, such as H1N1 flu, and well-known killers, such as cancer.

Your daily habits, including the foods you eat and your exercise and sleep routines, have a significant effect on your immune function. And even if your lifestyle choices are exemplary, environmental toxins, emotional stress, and the wear and tear of aging all conspire to weaken immunity. How Well Are You Doing at Keeping Your Immune System Healthy?

Students Happier with Plants in Room

From Garden.org Newsletter

It’s widely known that the presence of houseplants in rooms improves air quality, reduces eye irritation and stress, motivates employees, and even improves concentration. In one study, employees’ reaction time on computer tasks improved 12% with houseplants present. Now researchers have found that University students can benefit from having houseplants in the classroom as well.

Researchers from Texas State University and Texas A&M University analyzed three sets of two classes each -- about 385 students. One set of classes had no plants in their classroom, while the others had an assortment of tropical plants.

At the end of the semester, students filled out a survey. Although there was no difference in overall grades or academic performance, researchers found students in the classroom with houseplants evaluated the course higher in instructor’s enthusiasm and organization. They generally had more positive feelings about the class than those in plant-less room. The plants had the most impact in classrooms with no other natural elements.

How Rheumatoid Arthritis Spreads

Cells surrounding joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis may spread the disease to other joints by traveling through blood vessels, according to a new study.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive disease that causes joint inflammation and destruction. Researchers say initially the disease starts out in just a few joints but soon spreads to other joints in the body.

Until now, the method of how the disease spreads from joint to joint was unknown. But a study in Nature Medicine suggests that cells called synovial fibroblasts may be to blame.

The cells, which are present in lining of the joints, are already implicated in the cartilage destruction associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

In the study, researchers implanted healthy human cartilage tissue plus synovial fibroblasts from people with rheumatoid arthritis into one side of lab mice. The opposite side was injected with healthy cartilage without the diseased fibroblasts.

After 60 days, the results showed that synovial fibroblasts had actively moved from one side of the mice's body to the other via blood vessels and were already causing cartilage damage.

Researcher Stephanie Lefevre of the department of internal medicine and rheumatology at the Kerckhoff-Clinic, Bad Nauheim, Germany, and colleagues say the study supports the notion that the spread of rheumatoid arthritis between joints is at least partially due to the migration of affected synovial fibroblasts through the bloodstream.

Supplements for Eye Health Work

For the last decade, claims that certain nutritional supplements may help prevent some of the most common eye diseases have been building.

As with many areas of health, not all of these claims are backed by solid research. But while many eye health experts approach popularly marketed supplements, that tout better eye health, with skepticism, there is research that suggests at least some supplements may indeed benefit those at high risk of advanced eye diseases.

Much of this research has surrounded age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, a leading cause of vision loss. It's a big problem; 8 million people are at risk for experiencing AMD, and 1.75 million people have an advanced form of AMD, according to the National Eye Institute. It is expected that the number of people who have AMD will double by the year 2020.

So, when a large study called the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, or AREDS, found that people at high risk for advanced AMD lowered their risk of the disease by about 25 percent when treated with a high-dose combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, and zinc, eye health researchers took heed.

The 2001 clinical trial, sponsored by the National Eye Institute, also found that taking these supplements reduced the risk of vision loss caused by advanced age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, by about 19 percent. Read the entire article.

Food Cravings As Addictive as Drugs

For Cari Banks, one of the hardest things to say no to is food. Cravings for sugary and fatty foods may be as addictive as heroin or cocaine.

"I could eat half a pack of Oreos and milk and consider it nothing," she said. "I would eat it, pretty much without thinking."

But new research shows Banks' sweet tooth could actually be more like substance abuse.

Dr. Joe McClernon at Duke University studies the brains of people who are addicted to drugs, such as the nicotine in cigarettes. He says that for many obese people, junk food can trigger the same response in the brain.

"You can see activation when smokers are looking at pictures of people smoking, and the same thing when overweight individuals look at food cues," said McClernon, an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center and director of the Health Behavior Neuroscience Research Program. "We see activation in areas involved in visual attention. Read the entire article and watch news video.

Hair and Nails

'I used to have such a full head of hair. It's thinned out so much my husband's starting to notice .... 'Look at these fingernails! They won't grow, they crack, they split, they peel and layer back. Gelatin and calcium don't help .... I feel like a television commercial: dull, lifeless hair. It's breaking a lot more than it used to I'm only 57, and my hair's so thin on top you can see wide open spaces between each hair. I don't want to be a bald granny!'

Even though fingernails and hair are common problem areas, there's not much 'priority research' being done. We don't have a National Hair Loss Institute and no politicians are declaring war on split nails. Trying to find answers to hair and fingernail problems isn't always easy.

What do you do when the bottle(s) of 'hair vitamins' don't work and your dermatologist says you don't really have a problem, although you know better? You say you've taken enough calcium to turn to stone but your nails are as bad as ever. Nail hardener or silk or acrylic nails may cover up the problem but wouldn't it be nicer, not to mention healthier, to grow your own? Read the entire article.

Cocaine, Heroin, Spices, & More In Our Water

A team of researchers in Washington State has found traces of cooking spices and flavorings in the waters of Puget Sound. (See map.)

University of Washington associate professor Richard Keil heads the Sound Citizen program, which investigates how what we do on land affects our waters.

The Puget Sound study is one of several ongoing efforts to investigate the unexpected ingredients that find their way into the global water supply.

Around the world, scientists are finding trace amounts of substances—from sugar and spice to heroin, rocket fuel, and birth control—that might be having unintended consequences for humans and wildlife alike. Read the entire article.

Depression and Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Common mental disorders include depression, anxiety and attention deficit/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD). Nutrition and supplements can support mental health. Studies show that a lack of certain dietary nutrients can contribute to the development of mental disorders.1

Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders and cause of disability in the United States.1 According to the National Institute of Health, clinical depression will affect up to 25 percent of women and up to 12 percent of men in their lifetimes.2 Depression is different from normal, occasional feelings of sadness or low mood in that these feelings are persistent and interfere with normal functioning and daily life.

Depression can occur when certain chemicals in the brain (neurotransmitters)—including serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine—are out of balance.3,4 Scientists studying depression have found that these chemicals are involved in regulating mood.5 Serotonin, together with dopamine, regulates appetite and aggression.4 Antidepressant drugs are a common conventional treatment for depression. These medications increase brain levels of neurotransmitters associated with mood. Many natural products also seem to affect these neurotransmitters and brain biochemistry.4

St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) has been used for centuries to support healthy mood. Phytochemicals in St. John’s wort—including hypericin, hyperforin, adhyperforin and other related compounds—appear to modulate serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, making these mood-enhancing neurotransmitters more available to the brain.6 Studies indicate that St. John’s wort works as well as certain antidepressant medications but without some of the common side effects they have.6 Studies have found that St. John’s wort may also be helpful for people who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that occurs during the winter months.6,7

SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) occurs naturally in the body but its levels decrease with age.4 SAMe plays a role in many important processes in the body, including immune system function, cell membrane maintenance, and in the synthesis of melatonin, dopamine and serotonin.8 SAMe has been reported to be beneficial for mood support. Some research indicates that SAMe is as effective as antidepressant medications for mood support but without the side effects associated with the medications, which include loss of libido, insomnia and headaches.8

5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is made in the body from the amino acid tryptophan and is the precursor to serotonin. Supplementation with 5-HTP increases serotonin levels in the brain.4,9 Serotonin has a positive effect on mood, sleep and anxiety.9 Scientific evidence suggests that 5-HTP might be comparable to SSRI antidepressant medications for improving mood.4

The brain requires a lot of energy and nutrients for optimum health and function. Nutritional supplements that support cognitive function in general can improve mood, concentration and focus.

Essential fatty acids such as those found in fish oil, flaxseed oil (omega-3 fatty acids) and in evening primrose and borage oils (omega-6 fatty acids) play a key role in normal brain function.10

B vitamins are important for healthy nervous system function. Emotional instability, irritability, fatigue, poor memory and insomnia are some of the signs of B vitamin deficiencies. Vitamin B6 is required for the body to make neurotransmitters, including dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine.10 Vitamin B12 is vital for maintaining healthy nerve cells.11 Folic acid (vitamin B9), works with vitamin B12 to produce Sadenosylmethionine (SAMe) in the body (11) and plays an important role in mental and emotional health.12 B vitamins can be depleted by physical or emotional stress. Supplementing with B vitamins can help to combat the negative effects of stress.

Some supplements combine protective herbs, antioxidants and phospholipids that favorably impact age-related memory loss, boost mental acuity and curb free radical damage to the brain. Other supplements provide nutrients that encourage balanced mental activity and support neurotransmitter levels in the brain.

PRODUCT INFO

Hi Potency Garlic (60 tablets)

Garlic is one of the world's most studied herbs. Historic uses of garlic are being proven in recent research experiments, but the advantages go further than early scientists suspected.

The only problem with getting garlic into the diet has always been the distinct odor it leaves on the breath. Now it is possible to manufacture odorless garlic. The question is, does it retain the potency of fresh garlic? Studies have shown that it doesn' t.

Nature' s Sunshine offers you the finest and most potent garlic on the market with a special coating that helps control the garlic' s odor. When broken open, these tablets have a strong garlic odor unlike "odorless" garlic products. Trade-secret processing and careful preparation of each tablet give NSP High-Potency Garlic a special locked-in freshness coating. It contains chlorophyll, which controls odor while assuring a long, effective shelf-life. Because the tablet does not break down for absorption until it reaches the small intestine, you receive the full nutritional value of garlic without the undesirable taste.

More recent studies have shown garlic to be of benefit to the digestive, circulatory and immune systems. Nature's Sunshine offers you the most potent garlic on the market with a unique coating to help control the strong garlic odor.

Benefits
• Enhances circulation.
• Supports the immune system.
• Aids in digestion.
• Helps support the liver.

How It Works
Garlic possesses important sulfur-containing compounds. It also contains 17 amino acids, including all eight essential amino acids, plus minerals like calcium, iron, potassium, germanium, selenium and zinc. All of these add up to a powerful herbal antioxidant to help maintain the body's health.

Nature's Sunshine's Advantage
After analyzing randomly selected samples of competitive products, we found that NSP High Potency Garlic had more total allicin potential (TAP) than five competitive brands.

Grown in Xinjiang, China and watered by pure subterranean canals from the snow-capped Tian Shan mountains, this variety of garlic is valued above all others for its great potency and superb quality.

It is dehydrated in a carefully controlled environment to preserve enzymes and other heat-sensitive compounds that are responsible for so many of the nutritional benefits inherent in fresh garlic.

Ingedients
Each 400 mg tablet equals 1,200 mg of fresh garlic, roughly equal to one clove.

Recommended Use
Adults: take 1-2 tablets daily with a meal.
Children: take 1/2 tablet daily with a meal.

Olive Leaf Extract Concentrate (60 capsules)

When it's time to assist immune function or strengthen the circulatory system with help from powerful nutrients, Olive Leaf Extract stands ready to help.

Traditional Use
Olive leaf was used for centuries before modern techniques were developed to concentrate its benefits into a more powerful extract. Now available from Nature's Sunshine, this product possesses a formidable range of effective results.

Benefits
Most people know the benefits of olive oil for circulatory health. But Nature's Sunshine Olive Leaf Extract alone appears to support several circulatory needs all at once, including blood pressure balance, healthy arteries, normal heart rhythm and free radical protection.

Oleuropein, a key constituent, is a prime example. It was found to be one ingredient in a compound produced by the olive tree that makes it particularly robust and resistant against insect and bacterial damage. It is thought to prevent LDL or “bad” cholesterol from oxidation, much like vitamin E, but with even stronger results.

Nature's Sunshine Olive Leaf Extract:
• Protects against viral, bacterial and parasitic invasion - especially desirable during foreign travel.
• Does not harm beneficial bacteria.
• Helps the body control blood pressure.
• Fights free radical damage as a strong antioxidant.
• Supports healthy blood sugar levels.
• Serves the immune, circulatory, urinary and digestive systems.

Research
In a series of experiments, oleuropein was found to inactivate bacteria by apparently dissolving the outer lining of microbes.

At the University of Milan Pharacological Sciences, researchers found that oleuropein inhibited oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, the so-called "bad cholesterol" involved in heart and aterial disease. This revelation, if confirmed by further research, suggests that oleuropein may contain antioxidant properties similar to other phytochemical compounds.

Medical researcher Morton Walker, D.P.M., writing about olive leaf extract in the July 1996 issue of the Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, comments that the intake of flavonoids "is correlated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease indicated that the daily intake of olive oil and/or olive leaf extract containing phenols will likely bring on a similar result."

At the present time, the cardiovascular research community is excited about such actions. Studies have shown that some phytochemicals can reduce the harmful oxidation of cholesterol as well as slow down the accelerated clumping of blood platelets that can lead to dangerous clots.

At Spain's University of Granada, pharmacologists determined that olive leaf extract causes relaxation of arterial walls in laboratory animals. Such results suggest a possible benefit for hypertension, an effect first mentioned by researchers more than 30 years ago.

In Tunis, researchers found that aqueous extract of olive leaves reduced hypertension, blood sugar, and the level of uric acid in rodents. This finding again indicates potential in the treatment of hypertension, as well as diabetes and heart disease. An elevated uric acid level is a risk factor for heart disease.

Researchers at Upjohn found olive leaf extract effective in test tube experiments against the following viruses: herpes, vaccinia, pseudorabies, Newcastle, Coxsacloe A 21, encepthlomyocarditis, polio 1, 2, and 3, vesicular stomititus, sindbis, reovirus, Moloney Murine leukemia, Rauscher Murine leukemia, Moloney sarcoma, and many influenza and parainfluenza types.

They found it effective against these bacteria and parasitic protozoans: lactobacillus plantarum W50, brevis 50, pediococcus cerevisiae 39, leuconostoc mesenteroides 42, staphylococcus aureus, bacillus subtilis, enterobacteraerogenes NRRL B-199, E. cloacae NRRL B-414, E. coli, salamonella tyhimurium, pseudomonas fluorescens, P. solanacearum, P. lachrymans, erwinia carotovora, E. tracheiphila, xanthomonas vesicatoria, corynesbacterium Michiganese, plasmodium falciparum, virax and malariae.

The researchers credit a number of unique properties possessed by the olive leaf compound for the broad killing power:

*An ability to interfere with critical amino acid production essential for viruses.

* An ability to contain viral infection and/or spread by inactivating viruses or by preventing virus shedding, budding or assembly at the cell membrane.

*The ability to directly penetrate infected cells and stop viral replication.

* In the case of retroviruses, it is able to neutralize the production of reverse transcriptase and protease. These enzymes are essential for a retrovirus, such as HIV, to alter the RNA of a healthy cell.

* It can stimulate phagocytosis, an immune system response in which cells ingest harmful microorganisms and foreign matter.

The research suggests that this may be a "true anti-viral" compound because it appears to selectively block an entire virus-specific system in the infected host. It thus appears to offer healing effects not addressed by pharmaceutical antibiotics.

Nature's Sunshine Advantage
This amazing product delivers one of the highest levels of oleuropein available anywhere. To ensure maximum results, Olive Leaf Extract is specially prepared by a patented process to concentrate its desired natural benefits. And considering its high level of effective ingredients, standardized to 12 percent oleuropein, it is competitively priced.

Ingredients
Olive (Olea europa) Leaf Extract 400 mg
12% oleuropein (standardized) 48 mg

Other Ingredients: Cellulose (plant fiber), magnesium stearate (vegetable), Maltodextrin, gelatin, and water.

Recommended Use
Take 1–3 capsules daily with a meal.

Miscarriages After Swine Flu Vaccines

U.S. health authorities have made pregnant women one of the highest priority groups for getting the H1N1 swine flu vaccine, but is it actually safe for pregnant women and their babies?

Miscarriage reports from pregnant women who have taken the H1N1 swine flu vaccine are starting to pour in from all over the nation. Vaccines and pregnancy simply do not mix safely. In fact, the package inserts for the swine flu vaccines actually say that the safety of these vaccines for pregnant women has not been established.

What you are about to read on the article link should shock and anger you. If they are telling us that the swine flu vaccine is not safe for children under 6 months of age, then why in the world would it be safe for pregnant women and their babies? That doesn't make an ounce of sense! Read the article.

Yellow Pea Flour For Diabetics

Yellow pea flour may help prevent and manage type 2 diabetes by replacing whole wheat flour as an ingredient in creating low glycemic index foods.

A new study suggests that yellow pea flour may be an inexpensive substitute for wheat flour to create healthier, low glycemic index versions of typically high glycemic index foods, such as cookies, breads, and pasta.

The glycemic index (GI) of a food refers to the spike in blood sugar (glucose) levels produced after eating it. High glycemic index foods produce a more rapid spike in blood sugar levels, which can be dangerous for people with type 2 diabetes who need to keep their blood sugar levels under control to prevent complications.

Researchers say pulses, including yellow peas, are now being studied as potential functional ingredients in foods because they possess a number of health benefits. They are high in fiber, protein, and antioxidants and are low in fat. Eating whole pulses has also been shown to lower glucose levels after meals.

But they say few studies have looked at the feasibility of producing foods with pulse-derived ingredients that are good to eat as well as good for you.

Low GI Flour Alternative

In the study, published in the Journal of Food Science, researcher Christopher Marinangeli, MSc, RD, of the University of Manitoba and colleagues created banana bread, biscotti, and pasta using whole yellow pea flour.

They then compared the glucose responses of 19 healthy men and women who ate the new yellow pea flour and traditional whole wheat flour versions of the foods.

The results showed that whole yellow pea flour banana bread and biscotti produced lower glycemic responses compared to white bread, and whole yellow pea flour biscotti produced a more favorable glycemic index response than whole wheat flour biscotti.

The whole yellow pea flour pasta, however, did not show any difference in glycemic index response compared to traditional whole wheat pasta. Researchers say this may be because of the pasta’s exposure to water during cooking, which may affect absorption of the carbohydrates from the pasta.

The participants rated the appearance, smell, taste, texture, and overall appeal of the foods on a scale of one (dislike very much) to five (like very much). All of the whole yellow pea flour foods scored above a 3 on all categories except “texture” for the biscotti, which had an average rating of 2.6 in that category, and “smell” for the whole yellow pea flour pasta, which scored an average of 2.9.

Researchers conclude that the results support the use of whole yellow pea flour as an alternative ingredient in producing "tasty, low glycemic foods that help prevent and manage type 2 diabetes.

Breathing Improves Mental Health

Three Exercises For Better Health

In his ongoing study, participants are asked to breathe in sync with tones generated by a special device. “The device trains them to breath slower and pace breaths until they reach six to eight breaths per minute,” explains Anderson.

Other studies are also showing that varying our breathing techniques can be an effective tool in handling and managing depression, anxiety and stress-related disorders.

Medical doctors Richard Brown and Patricia Gerbarg have studied the effects of various breathing practices on the stress levels of tsunami victims, Australian Vietnam veterans, emergency responders and other groups that suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome. Read the entire article.

Music Makes Exercise Easier

Running with music has become so common that the two biggest names in both industries, Nike and Apple, have been joined at the hip with the Nike - iPod combination. So, what is it about music and running, or any exercise, that feels so right?

For the last 20 years, Costas Karageorghis, a sports psychologist at Britain’s Brunel University, has been setting the research pace for understanding our need to groove and move.

According to Kargeorghis, there are four factors that contribute to a song's motivational qualities: rhythm response, musicality, cultural impact and association. Read the entire article.

Cancer Screening - Essentially Useless

Experts Finally Begin Questioning Sanity of "Routine Screening"

Cancer experts are expressing increasing concern over the explosion of campaigns urging people to get regularly screened for a wide variety of cancers, warning that such programs may do more harm than good.

"It is a real problem," said Otis W. Brawley of the American Cancer Society. "They are doing things that might actually harm the people they want to help."

Brawley made his comments about supporters of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz's bill that would mandate an education program to promote breast cancer self-screening among young women. But the comments could just as easily apply to supporters of the American Urological Association's ad campaign urging prostate cancer screening, or the Light of Life Foundation's ads promoting screening for thyroid cancer.

There are now campaigns to promote regular screening for nearly every variety of cancer, based on the widespread popular belief that early detection of cancer is important in saving lives. Yet experts note that for the vast majority of cancers, there is little support for this belief.

In the absence of specific risk factors – like a history of smoking or family history of a certain kind of cancer – or symptoms – like a lump – there is no evidence that routine cancer screening reduces death rates. There are only three exceptions to this general rule, said the United States Preventive Services Task Force, a panel of medical experts commissioned by Congress. Women should get regular pap smears starting at age 21 and mammograms starting at age 40, while all people should be screened for colon cancer starting at age 50. Of these three, the evidence for the usefulness of breast cancer screening is the weakest.

Critics of cancer awareness campaigns note that such campaigns can make people think that the risk of dying from cancer is actually much higher than it really is. For example, contrary to what the current ad campaign might suggest, only 1600 people die from thyroid cancer each year in the United States. An incorrect assessment of risk might lead people to perform unnecessary screenings that can actually be harmful. Read the entire article.

Prescription Drug Poisonings Increasing

by Candy Sagon, a food and health writer in Washington, D.C.

A study of accidental deaths in the United States reveals a troubling new trend: The death rate for white women ages 45 to 64 from unintentional poisoning—most commonly by prescription drug abuse—more than tripled between 1999 and 2005.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that women in this age group had a 230 percent increase in mortality rate due to poisoning, while white men the same age experienced a 137 percent increase. Study coauthor Susan Baker says that the most recent federal data for 2006 show “the death rate for those women increased 273 percent—nearly fourfold.” Baker says the spike in poisoning deaths can be traced to a dramatic increase in the use of powerful painkillers.

Edward Krenzelok, director of the Pittsburgh Poison Center, says painkillers like Percocet and oxycodone “are being tremendously overprescribed.” He adds that people are “naive” about the high risk posed by improper use.

Why We Still Aren't Disease-Free

When the human genome was first sequenced nearly a decade ago, the world lit up with talk about how new gene-specific drugs would help us cheat death. Well, the verdict is in: Keep eating those greens.

Ernest Hemingway's writing may have tended to the short and sharp, but the man himself was apparently fond of the cuddly and extraneous, at least when it came to kittens with too many toes. A sea-captain friend of Hemingway's, it seems, persuaded him to take in a polydactylic cat, and that cat became the progenitor of a colony of overly toed felines thriving today in and around the museum in Key West that was Hemingway's home. The patterns of inheritance among those cats have even helped shed a bit of light on certain defects in human DNA. And so it is that Papa retroactively became an early contributor to the science of the human genome.

I learn this from Nadav Ahituv, a rising-star geneticist at the University of California, San Francisco, Medical Center, who studies the genetic roots of limb-related defects, obesity, and drug absorption. Congenital defects hold a special significance for Ahituv: As a teenager, he was in a body brace for three years with scoliosis. "It was not fun," he says. "I spent my time reading Kafka, and then I started in on genetics textbooks, thinking that if I could understand what had gone wrong with me, maybe I could find a way to help others."

It must have been time well spent, because Ahituv, a fit-looking fellow who gets to work by propelling a folding bike up the city's famously steep hills, has shown an uncanny knack for tracking human traits and disorders down to specific sections of DNA. He can now point out limb-altering segments of chromosomes as easily and precisely as he might map out coffee shops in the Lower Haight. Read the entire article.
