5 Symptoms Men Shouldn't Ignore

Women listen to their bodies and go to the doctor when something isn't right. Men tend to seek medical attention when they're at death's door -- or when their wives prod them into going.

"I think it's a macho thing," says Dr. Barron Lerner, professor of medicine and public health at Columbia University. "Or maybe it's denial. Maybe they think if they deny a problem, it doesn't exist."

While the list, according to these physicians, is endless, here are the top five symptoms men ignore -- sometimes until it's too late.

1. Chest pain - You'd think this would be the last thing a man would ignore, but our men's health experts say it happens all the time.

2. A big belly - "Belly fat is the worst fat you can have," says Dr. Harry Fisch, a professor of clinical urology at Columbia. "A big belly is a sign a man has low testosterone levels. And the lower the testosterone, the greater the risk of diabetes and coronary artery disease."

3. An unenthusiastic penis - Impotence may be purely psychological, but it also could be a sign that a man has cardiovascular disease.

4. More frequent urination - Urinating more frequently can be a sign of prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate gland.

5. Prescription drug addiction - Dr. Joel Heidelbaugh, a family medicine specialist at the University of Michigan Medical School, says, "Maybe they're taking medicine for back pain, and a couple of years later they're still on them. They can't function without them, and they don't even know it."

Relief From Chronic Back Pain

Chronic back pain is a condition that affects a significant part of the population, with patients falling into three major groups; those with herniated discs, spinal stenosis (a nerve affecting narrowing of the spinal cord), and complications from failed back surgery.

Radiofrequency thermolesioning is a widespread treatment for chronic back pain, but because of its neurodestructive nature, it is often considered an unsuitable treatment.

Building on earlier work, a new study led by Dr. David Abejón investigates the use of an alternative treatment known as pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) in treating chronic back pain. It finds that the treatment yields significant improvements for herniated disc patients and notable improvements for those with spinal stenosis. Since PRF does not involve drugs, it may be repeated multiple times. This study appears in the journal Pain Practice.

While the preexisting conditions that accompany chronic back pain, such as neurological lesions or neuropathic pain, make conventional radiofrequency a controversial treatment, Abejón notes “the use of PRF could reduce or potentially even eliminate these risks,” providing safe, effective pain relief for patients with a variety of lower back pain conditions.

A Merry Heart Is Medicine

Solomon had wisdom in that statement from Proverbs 17:22. The human body, which God designed, can produce it's own disease fighting chemicals. God has created us "fearfully and wonderfully."

These bodies that we walk around in are truly amazing! Evolution is just not smart enough to equip us with the mind-boggling intelligence that our bodies contain!

For example, when you are joyful, your body secretes two types of chemicals that fight cancer and other diseases. When you experience that exhilarating feeling of being truly joyful, it does "good like a medicine."

One type of chemical released in your body when you are joyful is called "neuropeptide." These neuropeptides are the same kind of chemical that cancer patients are injected with at the cost of up to $40,000.00 per shot! And God created our bodies to produce them naturally by having a joyful heart!

Another chemical secreted into the bloodstream, by having a joyful heart, is known as "opioid." (You can see the root word for "opium" which can be a dangerous drug but produces a calming effect.)

Opioids when secreted into the bloodstream enhance the immune system to help fight the common cold. So, is there a cure for the common cold? Yes! A merry heart!

You see, our minds, bodies and spirits are all connected. We are a walking network of amazing super-intelligence! We are not "gods," but we are created "in the image of God."

God has created us so unique. When we are joyful, our minds, bodies and spirits are effected by it. Your mind can sense true joy coming from your spirit, and when your mind senses joy on the radar screen, it sends out "opioids" into the bloodstream which connect with "monocytes." The monocytes receive messages from the opioids which trigger a Pac-Man like response and they begin to eat bacteria and viruses that tear down your immune system.

If you are plagued by fear, worry, stress and anger, you are opening the door to sickness. Your body is not secreting what it needs to keep you vibrant. Is it any wonder Jesus tells us to stop worrying? (Matthew 6). Is it any wonder that the Apostle Paul tells us to stop worrying? ( Phil. 4). Seek first His Kingdom and righteousness and all of your needs will be given unto you. (Matt. 6:33)

Take care of your mind, body and spirit. Have a joyful heart. Stop killing yourself. Allow that wise body God gave you to release those wonderful chemicals in order that you may experience optimum health and performance for His glory!

Injured Veterans Regrow Body Parts

In an operating room in Texas, a wounded American soldier underwent a history-making procedure recently that could help him regrow the finger that was lost to a bomb attack in Baghdad last year.

Army Sgt. Shiloh Harris' doctors applied specially formulated powder to what's left of the finger in an effort to do for wounded soldiers what salamanders can do naturally: replace missing body parts.

Importance of Cleansing

The Slow Movement - Taking Back Time

Edgar S. Cahn is fighting for your right to be lazy. Other activists might devote their time to reversing global warming or saving the whales. But the 73-year-old attorney is battling to preserve a commodity that he says is more fragile than the environment and more precious than oil -- time.

Bad Results of Lasik Surgery

Perfect vision without glasses or contacts sounds wonderful. Before considering having Lasik surgery, though, it would be wise to ask how many people actually do have good results and how many will suffer bad effects years after Lasik surgery. The advertisements give the impression that it's a perfectly safe -- nearly foolproof -- procedure. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Interestingly, people who end up with corrected vision but permanent eye pain are considered successes by the surgeons who do the procedure.

Long term results are proving to be even worse. Lawsuits are popping up now as a result of problems developing years later.

Colin Dorrian was a 28-year-old patent lawyer. In the summer of 2007, he killed himself, leaving a note that blamed constant pain from Lasik surgery. He wrote, "I just cannot accept the fact that I'm supposed to live like this."

One optometrist, Chistine Sindt, who is also a University of Iowa associate professor of clinical ophthalmology, says that she has seen depression in people with vision problems caused by Lasik. "It's not just that they lose vision. They paid somebody... who took their vision away."

Stand Up & Fight for Health

I was reading one of my favorite devotional books, "My Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers, and came across an entry that caused me to picture something a little bit differently. I pray it will do the same for you.

We have learned that Jesus died on the cross to free of from our sin. That salvation is given freely - all we need to do is ask and mean it in our heart and we receive salvation with eternal life.

All that Jesus did on the Cross that day is available to us ... freely! The Bible says He bore our sins and our diseases (Ps. 103:3, Is. 53:5). We accept salvation as a gift ... and we must also accept healing as a gift. It was part of the early church. Somewhere along the way it was left behind.

What brought all this thinking to pass was this part of what I read in Oswald Chambers book:

"When we are born again of the Spirit of God, the note of testimony is on what God has done for us, and rightly so. But the baptism of the Holy Ghost obliterates that forever, and we begin to realize what Jesus meant when He said - "Ye shall be witnesses unto Me." Not witnesses to what Jesus can do - that is an elementary witness - but "witnesses unto me." We will take everything that happens as happening to Him, whether it be praise or blame, persecution or condemnation."

I thought to myself: He would take none of the sickness and disease upon His healed body. Why should we take it on ours?

Why should I not believe that Jesus died for my sins and my diseases? Will I stand up and fight for the health that Jesus died to give me? Does it make a difference in how I face this battle to wellness?

It should! Give it some thought and prayer.

Mayo Clinic Finds Optimistic Live Longer

An optimistic outlook on life could result in a longer and healthier life, Mayo Clinic researchers found in a 30-year patient study. The researchers found that the pessimistic group of patients had a 19 percent increase in the risk of death when comparing their expected life span with their actual life.

Toshihiko Maruta, M.D., a Mayo Clinic psychiatrist says, "It tells us that mind and body are linked and that attitude has an impact on the final outcome, death."

Kitchen Sponges Toxic

Whether you're doing the dishes or wiping down the counter, be sure that your sponge isn't leaving behind a toxic mess.

Though soppy kitchen sponges and dishrags are notorious breeding grounds for bacteria, avoid the temptation to pick up an antibacterial or antimicrobial option.

Antibacterial products are usually treated with the pesticide triclosan, which provides no additional protection beyond that of plain soap, according to researchers at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and may even contribute to the rise of some drug-resistant bacteria.

Not only that, but when triclosan is exposed to water treated with chlorine (and most municipal water is ), it can form the probable human carcinogen chloriform.

There are "greener" ways to lighten the bacteria load in sponges.

Safer Alternatives to Household Chemicals

When possible, please use a safer alternative instead of a hazardous product. Here are some suggestions:

Air Fresheners
Simmer cinnamon sticks, cloves and/or allspice
Place baking soda at the problem source
Leave a bowl of vinegar out in the area of the odor

Pesticides
Introduce predator insects in your yard
Apply soapy water to leaves and rinse well
Contact local Extension Office for more ideas

Fertilizers
Try composting and grass recycling

Bug Sprays
Red chili powder or boric acid at entry source

Window Cleaner
1/2 c. ammonia, 1/8 cup vinegar and 1 quart of warm water in a spray bottle

All Purpose Cleaner
Mix 1 quart of water with one of the following (1 t. liquid soap, boric acid, or vinegar)

Tub and Tile Cleaner
Boric acid (Borax) and water

Heavy Soils
Rub with solution of 2 T. baking soda and 1 cup warm water

Grease
Pour boiling water on stains and cover with dry baking soda

FDA Admits Dental Fillings Are Toxic

Mercury from amalgam dental fillings may be toxic to children and developing fetuses, the FDA now admits.

Experts say there's no proof that dental fillings cause harm to consumers. But they also say there's no proof that the fillings -- which are half mercury by weight -- are entirely safe.

On its web site, the FDA has dropped much of its reassuring language about dental amalgam. And it's added what amounts to a warning: "Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetuses."

Do MRI's Damage Health?

MRI scans have been hailed as a significant step forward in the diagnosis of medical conditions. But there is concern exposure to the magnetic fields they create may produce adverse long term health effects.

Sir William Stewart, the U.K. Health Protection Agency chairman, said: "MRI scanning has some undoubted benefits in medicine, especially as an aid to accurate clinical diagnosis.

"However we need to bear in mind that the magnetic fields produced by the machines are quite substantial and that these fields are increasing in order to achieve improved clarity of image. The exposures to patients and medical staff from the magnetic fields can be high and there is a shortage of information on possible adverse long term health effects."

Vitamin D Minimum To Be Increased

In addition to vitamin D's well-known function of increasing calcium absorption and thereby helping encourage healthy bone growth, it has shown promise in helping to prevent certain cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and osteoarthritis.

Foods naturally rich in vitamin D are scarce. However, while many in the scientific community are excited about its promise, they have yet to agree on how much you need and where to obtain it.

Vitamin D behaves like a hormone in the body, relaying chemical messages -- something no other vitamin does. For example, vitamin D signals the intestines to absorb calcium from foods and to regulate its uptake by bone cells.

"Vitamin D is a key component in helping the body respond to many different kinds of assaults and stimuli," says Robert Heaney, Ph.D., professor of medicine at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. "In the absence of it, you're asking the body to defend itself with one hand tied behind its back."

How much do you need?

The Institute of Medicine, a group that uses scientific research to formulate public health policies, currently recommends an Adequate Intake, or AI, rather than a specific daily amount of vitamin D. The AI for vitamin D is 200 International Units for adults under age 50, 400 IU for those 51 to 70, and 600 IU for those age 71 and above.

A group of leading scientists are calling for an "urgent need" to increase the AI for vitamin D. Among them was Walter Willett, M.D., the widely respected chairperson of the Harvard School of Public Health's department of nutrition. "The range we are talking about -- 1,000 IU per day -- is still a small dose," Willett says.

A fair-skinned person can manufacture 15,000 IU or more of vitamin D in as little as 30 minutes of optimal sun exposure.

Patsy M. Brannon, Ph.D., professor of nutrition at Cornell University, says "The current recommendation is a decade old. There's been a lot of research in the last 10 years. Whether there is sufficient strength of evidence to increase recommendations is where scientists disagree."

Until they reach a consensus, you have three options for obtaining vitamin D: food, sunlight, or supplements.

Source 1: Food

Foods naturally rich in vitamin D are scarce. Seafood options top the list -- cod liver oil, salmon, mackerel and tuna. (Bonus: they also contain heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.) After that, fortified foods help fill the gap. Milk is fortified with 100 IU per 8-ounce serving. Some yogurts and cheeses also contain vitamin D, as do breakfast cereals and juices.

Source 2: Sunlight

Every time sunlight warms our skin, your body produces vitamin D. However, sunlight is unreliable and several factors influence its ability to induce vitamin D production, including: the angle of the sun, the latitude in which you live, you skin pigmentation, age, and use of skin-care products containing sun-protection factor (SPF). Also, there's the not-small matter of skin cancer risk, which is heightened by exposure to sunlight.

Source 3: Supplements

Supplements are a reliable -- and safe -- source of vitamin D. The key is buying the right type of supplement. Most multivitamins are fortified with the current AI for vitamin D; 400 IU. Check the label to make sure the vitamin you choose is made with the D3 form (it may be listed as cholecalciferol).

Low-Salt Not Good For Heart?

Surprising new research suggests that a diet low in salt may be worse for your heart than eating lots of salt, but don't start eating potato chips just yet.

The study, published online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, doesn't confirm that a low-salt diet itself is bad for the heart. But it does say that people who eat the least salt suffer from the highest rates of death from cardiac disease.

Coping With Food Cravings

Strong cravings for starchy, sugary foods often go hand in hand with being overweight, chronically tired, feeling blue or other symptoms of ill health. They can be the result of out of whack blood sugar levels, Candida (yeast overgrowth), and adrenal fatigue. These imbalances can potentially cause disease, premature aging, and us to feel far less than our most fabulous selves.

Fortunately, there are some great ways to overcome your cravings. Here are some tricks that will keep you from longing for that cake and desperate for that large packet of potato chips.

Avoid your cravings for 2 weeks

"You crave what you eat, so if you switch what you're eating, you can weaken your old cravings and strengthen new ones," says Marcia Pelchat, PhD, of the Monell Center.

Research shows that even after 5 days you will find that your body will yearn for your trigger foods far less, and after two weeks the cravings are nearly gone.

On a physical level, your blood sugar will begin to balance out, so your body won't be crying out for foods that it falsely thinks will balance things out. On an emotional level, you will know that it is possible to live without those foods, and you will most likely notice some improvement in your wellbeing, which will keep you motivated. Both my parents died at age 62 of heart disease, and both were heavy smokers. I never took up smoking. I went on to become a medical sociologist and medical writer focusing on health promotion, disease prevention and early detection.
