Temper Tantrums Early Sign

Children who throw long, aggressive or frequent temper tantrums may be doing more than just showing mum and dad who is boss. They may be displaying early signs of a psychiatric disorder, research shows.

Children who hurt themselves or others during tantrums or who cannot calm themselves down may be diagnosed with depression or disruptive disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or oppositional defiant disorder.

Deaths From Herbs vs. Drugs

From Natural News

The Stanford Daily Journal reported that about 125,000 deaths occur per year due to people taking prescription drugs incorrectly.

Total unexpected deaths from the western medical profession in this country (USA) was estimated as high as 800,000 per year (this would include all malpractice, iatrogenic disease, surgery and anesthesia problems, drug overdose, drug misuse and abuse and drug side-effects).

While my research into the matter certainly did not reveal a very clear picture of how many people were really dying due to drugs, it did reveal enough to make the point, which is that herbs are far, far safer on their worst day.

On average, herbs kill a grand total of 5-6 people per year and herbs get abused all the time. People use herbs in a crazy, out of balance way without even consulting a qualified herbalist and we still get 5-6 people per year.

There are a few more medical conditions blamed on herbs but believe me when I tell you that the most dangerous herb still in use is far safer than the safest over-the-counter drug.

Reducing Meat Consumption

The risks from eating meat and the benefits of replacing the meat on your plate with plant-based alternatives, especially legumes, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, are well researched and reported.

Recall: 143 Million Lbs. of Beef

This story is just too emotional an issue for me to say much more than the title. There's been enough information circulating about Mad Cow Disease in the U.S. for quite some time. Obviously our government agencies are not working for the welfare of the population as much as the corporations.

Many of these recalls are announced AFTER the products have already been consumed. This one affecting so many school children just has me more upset because to me children are the true innocents in our world.

Then there's the issue of animal welfare and the humane treatment of animals used for food. Words just don't come to mind. Read the entire story.

U.S. Drugs Coming From China

The blood thinner drug Heparin is being made from chemicals imported from China. The FDA tells Americans they can't buy drugs from Canada because they're "unsafe" and yet drug companies buy contaminated chemical ingredients from a country that has been too often in the news as "unsafe."

If you think these Chinese chemical companies are being inspected, the facts show that 93% of the factories have not been inspected, so they have no idea about quality control being used (if any is being used).

The news article reads:

A Chinese facility that hasn't been inspected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration made the active ingredient in much of the widely used Baxter International Inc. blood-thinner that is under investigation. Baxter announced that it had temporarily halted production of its version of the generic anticlotting drug heparin because of about 350 bad reactions potentially tied to the drug, including four fatalities after reports of hundreds of allergic reactions and four deaths among the drug's users, the agency said yesterday.

China is now the world's largest producer of active pharmaceutical ingredients -- the chemical compounds needed to make finished pills and other drugs.

Recent testimony from the Government Accountability Office said that the FDA may only inspect around 7% of foreign drug-making facilities in a given year, and it would take the agency more than 13 years at that rate to inspect all the plants. The testimony also said the FDA "cannot provide the exact number of foreign establishments that have never been inspected."

Health Effects of Clutter

The country’s collective desire to clean up is evident in the proliferation of organization-oriented businesses like the Container Store and California Closets.

Skipping Meals Can Be Good

A study found that skipping meals every other day could actually improve a patient’s health. In that study overweight adults with mild asthma ate normal meals one day. This was followed by a day of severely restricted eating, when they ate less than 20 percent of their normal caloric intake, or about 400 or 500 calories a day — the equivalent of about one meal. Nine out of 10 study participants were able to stick to the eating plan.

After two months, the dieters lost an average of 8 percent of their body weight, and their asthma-related symptoms also improved. They had lower cholesterol and triglycerides, “striking” reductions in markers of oxidative stress and increased levels of the antioxidant uric acid. Markers of inflammation were also significantly lower.

However, skipping meals during the day and then overeating at the evening meal results in harmful metabolic changes in the body.

Polycarbonate Bottles A Problem

Worries about a hormone-mimicking chemical used in the trendy sports accessory led a major Canadian retailer to remove Nalgene and other polycarbonate plastic containers from store shelves in early December.

There is little dispute that the chemical can disrupt the hormonal system, but scientists differ markedly on whether very low doses found in food and beverage containers can be harmful.

An expert panel of researchers cited evidence that Americans have levels of BPA higher than those found to cause harm in animals.

Patagonia Inc., another outdoor-gear retailer based in Ventura, Calif., pulled polycarbonate water bottles from its 40 stores worldwide in December 2005 and, a month later, organic foods chain Whole Foods Markets stopped selling polycarbonate baby bottles and child drinking cups.

Electronic Tagging Of People

Proposed electronic tagging of dementia sufferers, with their agreement, has been backed by the Alzheimer's Society. The charity said the plan could empower patients by allowing them to wander, but called for a debate on the ethics of gaining consent.

The government has said tagging could allow people to lead "fuller lives".

Some Skip Chemo and Do Fine

Thousands of breast cancer patients each year could be spared chemotherapy or get gentler versions of it without harming their odds of beating the disease, new research suggests.

One study found that certain women did better — were less likely to die or have a relapse — if given a less harsh drug than Adriamycin, a mainstay of treatment for decades.

Another study found that a gene test can help predict whether some women need chemo at all — even among those whose cancer has spread to their lymph nodes, which currently typically leads to full treatment.

Walking Helps Memory

"There's an avalanche of neuroscience to support that (physical) exercise is good for the brain," said John Ratey, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and co-author of an upcoming book on the subject.

That's hopeful news for many who worry that growing old may mean losing their minds.

A survey conducted last year by Harris Interactive for the MetLife Foundation found that Alzheimer's was a bigger source of anxiety for Americans 55 and older than heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

In a six-year study of 1,740 adults 65 and older published last year in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers found those who exercised more than three times a week were less likely to develop dementia than those who didn't.

A 2005 study of 3,375 adults in the same age group produced similar results. But investigators said the findings, while encouraging, don't yet prove that exercise prevents the onset of dementia.

Hawthorn For The Heart - People and Pets

Regarding the value of herbal treatment for patients with heart failure, a new review of existing research suggests that Hawthorn Extract "significantly" improves symptoms.

A group evaulated hawthorn extract against a placebo for treating patients with chronic heart failure. They identified 14 randomised control trials that compared the effects of adding Hawthorn Extract or placebo to conventional therapies.

The trials involved a total of 855 patients and the data indicated that Hawthorn Extract:

* improved maximal workload,
* increased exercise tolerance,
* reduced oxygen consumption by the heart
* reduced shortness of breath and fatigue
* a few people reported mild nausea, dizziness and heart and stomach complaints

I have used Hawthorn Extract for years for a heart problem and find it to be wonderful. A side benefit is that it builds the adrenal glands and with the stresses of life always there to bombard us, I really like knowing I'm feeding those adrenal glands too.

It's a great herb for pets also and is part of the natural heartworm programin the HSII formula since you need to build their heart when you destroy the heartworms.

False Medical Research on Household Chemical

For decades chemical-makers have assured the public that the hormone-mimicking compound Bisphenol-A is safe, and the federal government agreed. This chemical is used in baby bottles, aluminum cans and hundreds of household products.

Recently the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has found that studies and research are heavily funded by the chemical companies producing the chemical.

The article says 80% of academically and government-funded research found that bisphenol-A is harmful in laboratory animals. Most of the industry-funded studies found there was no harm.

YouTube: Anti-vaccination Views

“YouTube is increasingly a resource people consult for health information, including vaccination,” says first author Keelan, an assistant professor in U of T’s Department of Public Health Sciences. “Our study shows that a significant amount of immunization content on YouTube contradicts the best scientific evidence at large. From a public health perspective, this is very concerning.”

The research team also found that videos skeptical of vaccinations – many of them highly provocative and powerful – received more views and better ratings by YouTube users than those videos that portray immunizations in a positive light.
