Cadbury Chocolate Recall

Even after the FDA assured us all that the melamine scare wouldn't impact U.S. consumers, it turns out that Cadbury chocolates made in China appear to contain melamine -- the same chemical that has sickened some 54,000 children who have developed kidney stones or other illnesses after drinking the contaminated baby formula. Produce PLU's Decoded

Those sticky labels on your produce provide helpful information about what you're about to eat. Whether it's organic, genetically modified or has lots of pesticides.

The system is quite simple with a 4 or 5-digit number PLU number.

If it's not a 5-digit number beginning with a 9, it's not organic. If it is then the food has been grown to the standards set by the National Organic Standards Board.

All 4-digit codes are conventionally raised food, which means it's contaminated with pesticides and fertilizers that produce terribly depleted soils devoid of nutrients.

If it's a 5-digit number beginning with an 8, it's a genetically modified food (GMO) grown with conventional poisons in depleted soil from frankenseeds, which contain genes not grown by nature. More info on frankenseeds.

Fruit Juices Block Drugs

In 1991, David G. Bailey, PhD, and colleagues found that grapefruit juice increased blood concentrations of the blood pressure drug Plendil to possibly dangerous levels. Grapefruit juice, they later learned, slows down a key liver enzyme that clears Plendil -- and about 40 other drugs -- from the body.

Now Bailey reports that grapefruit, orange, and apple juices decrease the absorption of several important medications:

* The allergy drug Allegra, available generically as fexofenadine
* The antibiotics ciprofloxacin (Cipro, Proquin), levofloxacin (Levaquin), and itraconazole (Sporanox)
* The beta-blocker blood pressure drugs atenolol (Tenormin), celiprolol, and talinolol
* The transplant-rejection drug cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral)
* The cancer chemotherapy etoposide (Toposar, Vepesid)

"This is just the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure we'll find more and more drugs that are affected this way," Bailey says in a news release.

Prevent Diabetic Ills With Chamomile Tea

When you sit down for a meal today, consider drinking a cup or two of chamomile tea, especially if you have diabetes. A new study shows the tea may help prevent the development of diabetic complications, such as loss of vision, nerve damage, and kidney damage.

Chamomile tea, a popular drink in many countries and long considered to have medicinal benefits, has been studied more closely in the past 30 years, according to the report published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Chamomile has been used to treat inflammation, skin diseases, wounds, gout, and ulcers. Recent research shows that chamomile plant extract suppresses the growth of human cancer cells. New Era For Stevia

Coca-Cola and Cargill launched their jointly-developed brand of stevia. Now that a big, powerful corporation is backing it, the FDA will no doubt give it GRAS approval in no time... and that means a new era of stevia-enhanced foods and beverages may be upon us. Finally, a natural alternative sweetener! Stevia contains powerful antioxidants, by the way. So instead of giving you cancer (like chemical sweeteners do), this natural sweetener can actually prevent free radical damage! Read entire article.

Stevia is a natural sweetener emerging into U.S. consumer consciousness. It is extracted from the stevia herb, native to the South American rain forest. Its leaf tastes like honeysuckle.

In the race to put an all-natural, zero-calorie soft drink on the market, Zevia, a Seattle-based company, has beaten the beverage giants. Zevia, which comes in four flavors, is sweetened with stevia. Read this entire article also.

I still think phosphoric acid isn't a good thing for health, but this is exciting health news considering the research of the artificial sweetener dangers and weight-gaining link to diet sodas. We gave up sodas in the early 80's but there are many still drinking, so good alternatives to the health dangers are great. Stevia sweetener in packets.

Deaths Related To Arthritis Drugs

The FDA has received 240 reports of patients taking TNF blockers (Cimzia, Enbrel, Humira, and Remicade) who developed histoplasmosis, a fungal infection that starts as a respiratory infection and can spread throughout the body.

Of those 240 patients, 45 patients died, including at least 12 who hadn't been diagnosed with histoplasmosis right away. The FDA wants patients and doctors to watch for signs and symptoms of histoplasmosis, including persistent fever, cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Read the entire article.

Truths About The FDA

Book by Byron Richards:
Fight For Your Health, Exposing The FDA's Betrayal of America

The FDA is supposed to be an agency that serves to protect the American public, but that is not happening. This book includes:

• Why food companies are using consumers as guinea pigs with unsafe chemical additives

• How the pharmaceutical industry targets children for mass medication campaigns to increase profits

• The fraud behind the global fluoride programs

• How Americans are being poisoned in the public water supplies with toxic chemicals

• The plan to outlaw nutritional supplements which will create more health problems which will generate more profits for drug companies

• The truth about statin, Alzheimer and osteoporosis drugs

..... and so much more.

If you've read enough in the field of natural health, like me, this is not new information, but getting so much with one resource is a great way to access information that you can share with friends and family.

What To Say To Cancer Patient

She recommended starting out with some tenderness. "This is a tender time," she said. "It can be, 'Hey, you know you're great. I care about you. I love you and I'm here for you.' "

Healy said it is important to offer plenty of encouragement either in person or in a letter. "I know you can do this. Having cancer isn't fun. You're going to face some difficult times, but I know you can do this. You're strong."

She cautioned people to "think before they speak" to someone with newly diagnosed cancer. "One thing you don't want to do is instantly assume it's terminal. ... Often there is a feeling that people are going to write them off, or they're going to count them out."

Pesticide Fact Sheets

Thanks to Robin Sockness who posted a link to a site that provides fact sheets on pesticides.

Take a look and read about what you may already have stored at your house.

Before you buy that bug killer, be sure to check the information to know what else it will kill besides the bugs. There are some dangerous things being used out there. Seems chemical companies have some big pull in our country to be allowed to sell some of these things. Go to Pesticide

Colloidal Silver Concerns

Media reports are abuzz today with the story of Rosemary Jacobs, a 66-year-old Vermont woman who says her skin is permanently gray because of colloidal silver.

Jacobs blames her gray skin, a condition called argyria, on colloidal silver in nasal drops that she took as needed for four years starting as an 11-year-old. She says her skin slowly turned gray. Jacobs' case was noted in May 1999 in The New England Journal of Medicine.

You wouldn't get colloidal silver exactly the way Jacobs did today. The FDA has cracked down on colloidal silver, but that doesn't mean those products are totally gone. Paul Karason, the so-called "Blue Man" in California who says he drank colloidal silver and applied it to his skin, has also attracted media attention for his argyria.

Jacobs says she wants colloidal silver supplements to carry warning labels about argyria. She also wants anyone who makes unsubstantiated claims about their safety and efficacy to be prosecuted. FDA has cracked down on companies selling colloidal silver supplements. Read the entire article that answers some common questions.

Our family uses Silver Shield which is a colloidal silver product because it's a great help for the immune system. Silver Shield has an EPA designation as non-toxic (EPA# K043106) and a US patent (#7,135,195) for safe technology.

Quit Smoking With Herbs

There are several herbs with a traditional reputation for helping people quit smoking. These herbs exert varying effects that will ease the process of smoking cessation. Most of them can be found in either dried bulk, capsule, or liquid extract form. Follow the directions on the label for use. If using dried herbs, use them only to prepare tea, and never smoke them as a replacement for tobacco.

The first one mentioned is Lobelia. My dad used this to quit smoking many years ago. Its chemical structure is similar to nicotine so it fools the body physiologically while withdrawal and detox is occurring.

Caregivers Need Support

The self-help shelves at big-box book stores are sagging under the weight of how-to books for baby boomers new to the task of taking care of their frail, aging parents. These books touch all the bases: geriatric conditions, housing options, financial and legal matters, caregiver stress, government benefits, shifting family roles, national and state resources, checklists and Web sites. They are inclusive and informative, but a bit chirpy and somehow bloodless.

Sadly, the most compelling narratives on eldercare are hidden away in medical and professional journals. Excruciatingly detailed and heartfelt as only first-person accounts can be, they are written by doctors, nurses, social workers, administrators of nursing homes and the like, all of whom thought they knew everything about America’s flawed and overburdened long-term care system — until they had to navigate it and found themselves just as flummoxed as the rest of us.

Mobile Phones More Dangerous Than Smoking

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure to their radiation.

The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks.

It draws on growing evidence – exclusively reported in the IoS in October – that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Cancers take at least a decade to develop, invalidating official safety assurances based on earlier studies which included few, if any, people who had used the phones for that long.

Earlier this year, the French government warned against the use of mobile phones, especially by children. Germany also advises its people to minimize handset use, and the European Environment Agency has called for exposures to be reduced.

Professor Khurana – a top neurosurgeon who has received 14 awards over the past 16 years, has published more than three dozen scientific papers – reviewed more than 100 studies on the effects of mobile phones. He has put the results on a brain surgery website, and a paper based on the research is currently being peer-reviewed for publication in a scientific journal. Read more.

Legumes Cut Diabetes 40 Percent

A recent study by researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Shanghai Cancer Institute, suggests that an increased intake of legumes like peanuts and soybeans could reduce the risk of developing Type-2 diabetes by over 40 percent.

This is great news for people who have Type-2 diabetes or are in danger of developing it as legumes are a simple and delicious addition to any diet.

A vegetarian diet has long been noted as being beneficial to diabetics. Legumes such as beans, lentils, soy products, peanuts, etc., are an integral part of a balanced vegetarian diet. Legumes are an excellent substitution to meat because they are high in protein and iron and are very filling.

In addition to lowering a person’s risk of diabetes, a diet of vegetable proteins may reduce the risk of many other diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Legumes can also help facilitate weight loss because they are high in fiber and low in saturated fat with zero cholesterol!

Medicare Millions Lost - Dead Doctors

Scammers have found a lucrative source for squeezing money from Medicare: dead doctors.

Over seven years, the federal program for the elderly and disabled paid at least about $77 million — and possibly as much as $92 million — to purported medical equipment suppliers who used Medicare ID numbers of deceased physicians, says a report out Wednesday by congressional investigators.

Despite learning of the problem in 2001, the government failed to fix it, the report says. Investigators reviewed billing data submitted by equipment suppliers from 2000 to 2007 using the ID numbers of 1,500 deceased doctors.

Ads Don't List Side Effects

Drug companies are now running ads that don't even mention their drugs by name! This clever loophole allows them to avoid mentioning drug side effects in the ads.

If you don't name a drug in the television ad, you don't have to name the side effects either. Focus is now on talking about a health condition and then sending people to the website for the drug information. Read entire article. There's a lot more information in the comments.

211 professors from U.S. medical schools have endorsed a statement calling for an end to direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising. Prescription drug advertising pressures health professionals to prescribe particular medications, and often ones that may be less effective, more expensive and dangerous. 21 Dead After Bird Flu Vaccine

According to an article published in The Telegraph, a group of doctors recruited homeless people in Poland for a vaccine trial and paid them less than five dollars to be tested with what they were told was a regular flu vaccine.

What the unsuspecting, impoverished victims weren't told is that they were actually going to be given a bird flu vaccine. The director of a center for the homeless in Poland claimed that 21 people from his center died last year, when the usual number of deaths in a given year is about eight.

The vaccine was apparently given to up to 350 poor and homeless people last year which prosecutors say involved an untried vaccine to the highly-contagious virus.

Children's Vaccines Increase Diabetes

Two new studies showing that vaccines increase the risk of diabetes have been published in the Open Pediatric Medicine Journal.

In a prior study, published in the journal Autoimmunity, Dr. J. Bartholomew Classen of Classen Immunotherapies and David Carey Classen of the University of Utah compared more than 100,000 children who had received between one and four doses of the hemophilus vaccine with more than 100,000 unvaccinated children.

The Classens found that after seven years, children in the vaccination group had a 26 percent higher risk of developing diabetes than children in the non-vaccine group.

The Classens noted that the vaccine itself is only projected to prevent seven deaths and seven to 26 cases of permanent disability per 100,000 children.

Similac Formula Causing Obesity

Are infant formula products priming our babies for obesity? Here's a shocking, but true, fact:

One version of Similac for infants is made with an incredible 42.6% corn syrup solids and another 10% sugar! That's over 50% refined sugar in a product for babies!

Most mothers know that breast milk is best for baby, but there are some people who, perhaps for health reasons, need to find a safe alternative. In many instances, these moms look for an organic infant formula and are willing to pay top dollar to give their babies the best possible nutrition.

Sadly, just because an infant formula is given the "organic" label doesn't necessarily mean that it is healthy. Read the entire article.

Cats Cut Heart Attack Risk 30 Percent

Whether it's a frisky kitten or a tubby tabby, a cat at home could cut your heart attack risk by almost a third, a new study suggests.

The finding, from a 10-year study of more than 4,300 Americans, suggests that the stress relief pets provide humans is heart-healthy.

The stress-cardiovascular disease link is well-documented in scientific literature, and the affection and pleasure pets give humans is a known stress-buster. In fact, one study presented in 2005 at an American Heart Association meeting found that a single 12-minute visit with a dog improved the heart and lung function of people with heart failure.
